This top-down, center-out triangular shawl was inspired by the Alpaca Baby Blanket by Marie Grace, as well as the subtly-textured simplicity of Jared Flood's Romney Kerchief.
Instructions are provided both charted and line-by-line.
It is suggested to use a sport-weight yarn on size 9 US needles for a light, airy fabric, but it may also be worked in lace or fingering weight yarn on smaller needles, or conversely, sized up with heavier yarn. The only limit is your yardage! Please plan ahead accordingly.

Shaelyn Triangular Shawl by Leila Raabe
What Is Being Made
Shaelyn is a triangular shawl designed by Leila Raabe, created as a downloadable knitting pattern. This garment is a top-down triangular shawl that begins at the neck and expands outward, resulting in a versatile accessory suitable for layering or wrapping. The sample finished measurements are 48 inches across the top edge and 24 inches from the top of the center spine to the bottom point, making it an appropriately sized shawl for various body types and styling preferences.
Design Inspiration and Construction Method
Shaelyn draws inspiration from two notable shawl designs: the Alpaca Baby Shawl, a blanket design by Marie Grace, and the subtly-textured simplicity of Jared Flood's Romney Kerchief. The shawl employs a top-down construction method, beginning with a minimal cast-on of just 2 stitches at the center neck edge. The pattern increases by 4 stitches on every right-side row—one stitch at each edge and two stitches flanking the center spine stitch—creating the characteristic triangular expansion.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This advanced-level knitting pattern utilizes fundamental knitting techniques combined with strategic increases to achieve its geometric shape. The primary stitch used throughout the shawl is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric base. The pattern incorporates centered double decreases or increases positioned at the center spine, a common technique in top-down shawl construction that creates a decorative vertical line running from the neck to the point. Knitters will need to work with stitch markers to track the center spine location and maintain proper increase placement throughout the project.
Yarn and Needle Requirements
Shaelyn requires a minimum of 330 yards (300 meters) of sport weight yarn. The sample was knit in 2-ply CVM wool handspun, showcasing the pattern's compatibility with premium natural fibers. The pattern calls for US size 9 (5.5 mm) needles, though knitters may substitute needles as needed to achieve the correct gauge. The specified gauge is 15 stitches to 4 inches in stockinette stitch, which is essential for achieving the intended finished measurements.
Additional Materials and Notions
- 1 stitch marker (optional, though recommended for tracking the center spine)
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- Crochet hook similar in gauge to the knitting needle size
- Length of smooth waste yarn for the provisional cast-on method
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as advanced difficulty, making it suitable for experienced knitters who are comfortable with top-down construction, regular increase sequences, and gauge management. The pattern's complexity lies not in complicated stitch work but in maintaining consistent shaping and managing the expanding stitch count across multiple rows.
