Product Description
The Shadow Dishcloth Pattern was a design I loved all the more when completed. The two sides are so very different and each presents a beautiful design in its own right.
After binding off I turned the dishcloth over and over to admire my work; as we all do! I quickly noticed that the WS (wrong side) was just as pretty as the RS (right side). To tell you the truth I favored the WS over the RS. I posted on Laws Of Knitting (LOK) Facebook group asking which side every knitter preferred… It was a toss-up!
In this case, I used 2 colors for my dishcloth because I wanted to see what the stitch pattern looked like in different colors. If you want to knit your dishcloth up with just 1 color you will have enough yarn to do that with 1 skein.
Shadow Dishcloth by Joan Laws
What is Being Made
The Shadow Dishcloth is a small, functional knitted dishcloth designed by Joan Laws. This finished project measures 7½ inches by 7½ inches (19cm x 19cm), making it a practical size for kitchen use. The design demonstrates how a single stitch pattern can be showcased in different colorways, as the sample was knitted using two contrasting colors—Sage Green and Tangerine—to highlight the visual texture created by the stitch pattern.
Techniques Used
This project employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginner-level knitters. The pattern uses yarn overs (yo) to create deliberate holes and texture within the fabric. Slip stitches (sl1) are worked both with yarn in back (wyib) and with yarn in front (wyif) to create the characteristic shadow effect and visual interest of the design. The combination of these techniques produces a reversible, textured fabric with an open, lacy quality that is both decorative and functional.
Stitches Used
The Shadow Dishcloth pattern utilizes a repeating six-row stitch sequence that combines basic knitting stitches:
- Knit (k) and Purl (p) stitches form the foundational structure
- Yarn overs (yo) create intentional openings in the fabric
- Slip stitches (sl1) worked with yarn held in back (wyib) and in front (wyif) create the shadow pattern effect
The pattern repeats rows 1 through 6 multiple times to build the full dishcloth. The first row begins with a purl row, followed by alternating rows of knit-purl ribbing and the slip stitch pattern sequences. This creates a fabric with subtle texture and visual depth.
Materials and Specifications
The Shadow Dishcloth is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn. The recommended yarn is Lily/Sugar'n Cream, a 100% cotton yarn that provides durability and absorbency ideal for dishcloths. Each skein contains 120 yards and weighs 70.9 grams. The project calls for US6 (4mm) needles, or the size needed to achieve the correct gauge.
The gauge for this pattern is 18 stitches over 4 inches (10cm) in stitch pattern. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the finished dishcloth to measure the intended 7½ inches square. The pattern begins with a cast-on of 35 stitches, which creates the appropriate width for the finished piece.
Color and Yarn Considerations
While the designer's sample uses two colors—Sage Green (#00084) and Tangerine (#01699)—to showcase the stitch pattern, the pattern notes indicate that a single skein of yarn provides sufficient yardage to complete the entire dishcloth in one color if preferred. This flexibility allows knitters to customize their project based on personal preference or available materials. The 100% cotton composition makes this yarn particularly suitable for kitchen textiles, as cotton is absorbent, washable, and durable for repeated use and laundering.
Pattern Versatility
The Shadow stitch pattern is designed to be adaptable beyond the dishcloth format. The pattern notes specify that any odd number of cast-on stitches will work with this stitch pattern, making it suitable for scaling up to larger projects such as tea towels or baby blankets. This versatility makes the Shadow pattern a useful addition to a knitter's stitch library for creating various household textiles.
