Product Description
Last spring I received a note from a fellow knitter asking me if there was a hat to go along with the SEQUENCES SHAWL. She was knitting the shawl for a friend undergoing chemotherapy and wanted a hat to go with it. I was so touched that I immediately put down everything I was working on and knit up my first SEQUENCES HAT! I loved the hat so much that I decided that it would be great to have a pair of mitts as well!
Sequences Hat and Mitts by VERSACIKNITS
Project Overview
Sequences Hat and Mitts is a downloadable knitting pattern featuring a coordinating set of a hat and pair of mitts. This intermediate-level design showcases a striking colorwork approach by incorporating three distinct colors of worsted weight yarn throughout both garments. The pattern is shown in Woolfolk FÅR colors 01, 19, and 20, demonstrating how the color combinations create visual interest and dimension in the finished pieces.
Hat Construction and Specifications
The hat is available in two sizes: Medium and Large. The Medium size features a circumference of 18 ¾ inches (47.5 cm) with a length of 9 inches (23 cm), while the Large size measures 21 ¼ inches (54 cm) in circumference. The hat requires approximately 210 yards for the Medium size and 240 yards for the Large size of worsted weight yarn, with the yardage evenly distributed among the three colors—70 to 80 yards per color depending on size.
Mitts Construction and Specifications
The mitts are offered in one size with a circumference of 8 ¾ inches (22 cm) and a length of 9 inches (23 cm). This component requires approximately 195 yards of worsted weight yarn split evenly among three colors, with 65 yards allocated to each color. The mitts are knit flat and then seamed, with thumbs worked separately as part of the construction process.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs Garter Stitch as the primary stitch throughout both the hat and mitts, creating a textured, reversible fabric. Garter Stitch is formed by knitting every row when working flat or alternating knit and purl rounds when working in the round, resulting in horizontal ridges on both sides of the fabric. The three-color approach adds visual complexity while maintaining the straightforward stitch technique, making this an accessible intermediate project for knitters comfortable with basic construction methods.
The hat is knit in the round using double-pointed needles (DPNs), while the mitts are constructed flat on straight needles and subsequently seamed. The use of different needle types for each component demonstrates varied construction approaches within a single pattern.
Gauge and Needle Requirements
The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 36 rounds over 4 inches (10 cm) in Garter Stitch using the larger needles, measured after blocking. Knitters are provided with two needle sizes:
- Size 6 US (4.0 mm) needles
- Size 7 US (4.5 mm) needles
Both sizes are available as DPNs for the hat and as straight needles for the mitts. Knitters should select the needle size that allows them to achieve the specified gauge, as obtaining accurate gauge is essential for proper fit, particularly for the hat's circumference measurement.
Yarn and Material Specifications
The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn category suitable for creating substantial, durable garments. The total yardage requirements are modest—approximately 210 to 240 yards for the hat (depending on size) and 195 yards for the mitts—making this an ideal pattern for using leftover yarn in three complementary colors or for exploring a limited color palette. The pattern specifically showcases Woolfolk FÅR yarn, though any worsted weight yarn with similar characteristics and gauge will produce comparable results.
Pattern Difficulty and Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is well-suited for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle projects involving multiple colors, different construction methods (in-the-round and flat), and seaming. The straightforward Garter Stitch technique keeps the pattern accessible, while the three-color distribution and varied construction approaches provide appropriate challenge and learning opportunities for intermediate-level crafters.
