Segmented Belt by Frances Powell
Project Overview
The Segmented Belt is an adjustable crochet accessory designed by Frances Powell that can be customized to fit any waist size by adding or subtracting individual segments. This intermediate-level crochet project creates a flexible, modular belt where each segment can be worked independently and then assembled together, making it an ideal pattern for using up scrap threads or practicing fundamental crochet techniques.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a wearable belt composed of multiple crocheted segments that interlock or connect to form a complete accessory. Each segment measures 5 inches by 1½ inches when flat, and compresses to approximately 2 inches when inserted into the belt structure. The modular design allows crafters to adjust the final belt length by simply making more or fewer segments, accommodating various waist sizes without requiring pattern modifications.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
The Segmented Belt employs fundamental crochet techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The pattern utilizes several essential stitches and construction methods:
- Treble crochet (abbreviated as tr, equivalent to US double crochet) forms the primary fabric structure, worked at a gauge of 10 trebles per inch and 4 rows per inch
- Chain stitches (ch) create the foundation and connecting elements between segments
- Slip stitches (sl st) join segments and secure the belt structure
- Double treble stitches (dtr, equivalent to US treble) add textural variation and dimensional detail
- Shell stitches create decorative, lacy elements characteristic of delicate crochet work
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Segmented Belt requires minimal yardage, making it an economical project perfect for stash busting. For a single-color belt, one 50-gram ball of No 10 or No 12 crochet cotton (approximately 300 yards or 285 metres) provides sufficient material. For a two-color design, crafters should use one 50-gram ball of the main color and half a 50-gram ball of the contrast color. Alternatively, if using scrap threads, approximately 6 to 7 yards (5.5 to 6.5 metres) of thread is required per segment, allowing maximum flexibility in color combinations and yarn utilization.
Tools and Gauge
This project calls for a Size 1.5 mm crochet hook, which is appropriately sized for working with delicate crochet cotton thread. The specified gauge is 10 trebles per 1 inch (2.5 cm) horizontally and 4 rows of trebles per 1 inch (2.5 cm) vertically. Maintaining this gauge ensures that finished segments measure the correct dimensions and interlock properly when assembled into the complete belt.
Skill Level and Suitability
Designated as an intermediate-level pattern, the Segmented Belt is suitable for crocheters with foundational knowledge of basic stitches and techniques. The modular segment construction makes this an excellent project for practicing stitch consistency and precision, while the adjustable nature of the design provides flexibility for customization based on individual preferences and available materials.
