Seedling Cowl by Renee Kies
What Is Being Made
The Seedling Cowl is a knitted cowl neck accessory designed by Renee Kies. This intermediate-level project creates a cozy, versatile neckwear piece suitable for various seasons and styling options. The finished cowl features a classic ribbed texture that provides both visual interest and functional stretch.
Knitting Techniques Used
This cowl is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The project employs in-the-round knitting, a method that creates seamless, tubular fabric by working continuously in circular rows rather than flat rows that require seaming. This technique eliminates the need for finishing seams and creates a polished, professional appearance.
The pattern uses the long-tail cast-on method to establish the initial 169 stitches, a reliable technique that creates an elastic, finished edge ideal for neckwear. The cowl is completed with a bind-off worked in pattern, meaning stitches are secured while maintaining the ribbed texture established throughout the piece, ensuring the edge remains consistent with the overall design.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k) — the fundamental stitch that creates the characteristic V-shaped texture
- Purl stitch (p) — the reverse of the knit stitch, used to create textural contrast
These two basic stitches are combined in a 1x1 ribbed pattern, alternating one knit stitch with one purl stitch across each row. This ribbing pattern is repeated for 40 total rows (20 pattern repeats), creating vertical columns of texture that provide both elasticity and visual appeal. The alternating knit and purl stitches in successive rows create the classic ribbed effect that allows the cowl to stretch and conform comfortably to the wearer's neck.
Materials and Tools
The Seedling Cowl requires aran weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn category that works up quickly while maintaining excellent drape and wearability. The sample was created using Zeeman Tweed in colorway 01, with approximately 170 meters of yarn needed to complete the project.
Essential tools include 6 mm circular needles with an 80 cm cable, which provides the correct needle size for aran weight yarn and sufficient length to accommodate the 169 cast-on stitches while working in the round. Additional supplies needed are scissors for cutting yarn and a darning needle with an eye large enough to accommodate aran weight yarn for weaving in ends after binding off.
Pattern Overview
The Seedling Cowl begins with casting on 169 stitches and joining to work in the round, marked with a stitch marker at the beginning. The cowl body consists entirely of 1x1 ribbing worked over 40 rows total, created by alternating two rows: Row 1 alternates knit and purl stitches (k1, p1), while Row 2 reverses this pattern (p1, k1). This two-row sequence is repeated 19 additional times for a total of 40 rows of ribbed texture. The project concludes with binding off in pattern to maintain the ribbed appearance at the edge, followed by weaving in any remaining yarn ends with the darning needle.
