Product Description

This reversible scarf mixes up blocks and stripes to make a barrier against the cold. The two-layer design keeps it neat and elegant, while making it super-cosy in winter. In soft Alpaca, it will keep out icy chills. The colourwork is all simple stripes, no intarsia. You will also need to be able to pick up stitches and work a 3-needle bind off. The pattern works for any good 4ply/fingering to sportweight yarn since it is worked to measurements, not row counts.

Seawall Scarf by Louise Zass-Bangham

What Is Being Made

The Seawall is a double-sided knitted scarf designed by Louise Zass-Bangham. This elegant winter accessory measures 15cm (6 inches) wide by 150cm (60 inches) long, with custom size instructions included in the pattern. The two-layer construction creates a neat, polished appearance while providing exceptional warmth and coziness for cold weather wear.

Design and Construction Technique

The Seawall features a sophisticated double-sided design that combines blocks and stripes in a structured colorwork pattern. The two-layer construction method keeps the finished scarf neat and elegant while maximizing insulation. The colorwork is executed using simple stripes throughout, eliminating the need for more complex intarsia techniques. This makes the pattern accessible to intermediate knitters who want to create a visually striking piece without advanced colorwork skills.

Stitches and Techniques Required

Knitters will need intermediate-level skills to complete this project. Essential techniques include:

  • Stripe colorwork in knit stitch
  • Picking up stitches along edges
  • Three-needle bind off for joining layers

The pattern is worked to measurements rather than row counts, making it adaptable to different yarn weights within the sport and fingering weight range.

Materials and Yarn

The Seawall is designed to work with any quality 4ply (fingering) to sportweight yarn. The recommended yarn is Blue Sky Alpacas Melange & Sportweight, which is 100% baby alpaca at 100m (110 yards) per 50g skein. This luxurious fiber provides exceptional softness and warmth, making it ideal for a winter scarf.

Yarn Requirements:

  • 3 skeins Licorice 803 (A) – main color
  • 1 skein each of Relish 808 (B), Bubblegum 811 (C), Taupe 505 (D), Blue Cheese 812 (E), and Dijon 807 (F) – contrast colors

Leftover contrast color yarn is sufficient to coordinate matching accessories, such as the Leeward hat and Port & Starboard wristees. Larger custom sizes will require additional yardage.

Needles and Tools

This pattern requires circular needles in two sizes to accommodate the two-layer construction and stripe work:

  • 3.75mm (US 5) circular needles with 150cm (60 inches) cable
  • 3.5mm (US 4) circular needles with 150cm (60 inches) cable

The 150cm cable length is essential for managing the width and layers of this double-sided scarf design throughout the knitting process.
