Product Description
The inspiration for Seaboard came from a couple of sources. My passion for the Arts & Crafts Movement and the fashion of the 1920's/30's were leading factors for the design. I knew that I wanted to incorporate i-cords into the design and, after perusing many books and sources relating to the movement, I began playing around with design ideas and this is what happened.... While this design was taking shape, I was further inspired by the ongoing debate regarding climate change, considering the implications of rising seas and what this will mean to those living in coastal areas around the world. This was almost certainly influenced by the name and shade of the yarn I used for the sample. The name Seaboard seemed apt.
Seaboard Shawl by Neish Design
What Is Being Made
Seaboard is a knitted shawl designed by neish design, featuring a generous triangular silhouette with decorative tassels. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a finished shawl measuring 61 inches (155 centimeters) in width with a maximum depth of 11½ inches (29.25 centimeters) at the deepest point.
Knitting Techniques
The Seaboard shawl employs several intermediate knitting techniques to achieve its finished design. The pattern incorporates i-cord construction, which requires holding stitches on waste yarn or a spare circular needle throughout the project. The shawl is worked in the round using large circular needles to accommodate the substantial number of stitches required for the wide finished dimensions. Tassel embellishment is a key finishing technique, with tassels created using a cardboard wrapping method—a traditional approach where yarn is wound around a piece of card cut to approximately 3 to 4 inches in depth.
Stitches and Stitch Pattern
The pattern is worked in stitch pattern as specified in the downloadable PDF instructions. The gauge for this project is 24.5 stitches and 43 rows per 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked in the stitch pattern. The construction method involves managing a large number of stitches across the width, making circular needles essential for comfortable knitting.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
Seaboard is designed for 4 ply yarn, also known as fingering weight, allowing for delicate drape and detailed stitch definition. The pattern requires:
- Main Color (MC): 425 meters / 465 yards of 4 ply fingering weight yarn
- Contrast Color (CC): 85 meters / 93 yards of 4 ply fingering weight yarn
The sample shawl was knitted using Giddy Aunt Yarns: Beach Bum (Merino Smooth Sock, 75% Superwash Merino / 25% Nylon, 425 meters / 464 yards per 100g) for the main color, and Litha (Platinum Mini, 75% Superwash Merino / 25% Nylon, 85 meters / 92 yards per 20g) for the contrast color. These fiber blends provide elasticity and durability suitable for a wearable shawl.
Needles and Notions
The following needles and tools are required to complete the Seaboard shawl:
- 3.5mm / US 4 circular needle, 32 inches in length (to accommodate the large stitch count)
- 3.75mm / US 5 circular needle, 32 inches in length
- 3.5mm / US 4 double-pointed needles (dpns)
- Waste yarn for holding stitches
- Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- 53 safety pins (optional, for marking or holding stitches)
- Spare circular needle (optional, as an alternative to waste yarn for holding i-cords)
Pattern Format
Seaboard is available as a downloadable PDF pattern from neish design. The pattern includes complete instructions, stitch definitions, and references to external resources, including a tutorial link for tassel construction techniques found on page 4 of the pattern document.
