Product Description
Here in British Columbia we have a spectacular coast line. It is rugged and dense, and the colours are rich and moody.
This hat is a meeting of texture and colour, aimed at emulating that view. Sea to Sky is worked in single-ply fingering weight merino, and is great for using leftovers, a stash of Unicorn Tails or minis. The yarn is marled and then faded to create a colour gradient from sea to sky. Garter and stockinette are used to create the depth of texture found in nature.
Worked on larger needles with yarn held double, Sea to Sky is a quick satisfying project, and a great stash buster. There are two hat versions in this pattern: a relaxed beanie and a longer option for a slouchier profile. Colour choices are unlimited! Make Sea to Sky in the suggested colours, or paint a whole new experience in colours of your own choosing.
Sea to Sky Knit Hat by Carlie Perrins
Project Overview
Sea to Sky is a knitted hat design inspired by the dramatic coastal landscape of British Columbia, specifically the view of English Bay, Stanley Park, and the North Shore mountains from Vancouver's West End. This pattern captures the visual essence of the Pacific Ocean meeting mountain peaks and open sky through thoughtful yarn selection and textural stitch work. The design celebrates the rugged, moody colours and turbulent textures found in nature, making it an ideal project for knitters seeking to translate landscape inspiration into wearable art.
What You'll Create
This downloadable PDF pattern includes instructions for two hat versions, allowing knitters to choose their preferred style. Both versions are designed as satisfying, relatively quick projects that work beautifully as stash busters, making them perfect for using up yarn leftovers, mini skeins, or specialty yarn collections like Unicorn Tails.
Yarn and Materials
Sea to Sky is worked in single-ply fingering weight merino yarn held double on larger needles, which accelerates the knitting process and creates a fabric with excellent drape and warmth. The pattern takes advantage of marled and faded yarn techniques to create a natural colour gradient that transitions from sea tones through to sky blues and greys, mimicking the designer's inspiring coastal view.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs two fundamental knitting stitches to build textural depth:
- Garter stitch – created by knitting every row, this stitch produces a bumpy, textured fabric that echoes the turbulent surface of the ocean and rugged mountain terrain
- Stockinette stitch – formed by alternating knit and purl rows, this smooth stitch provides visual contrast and represents the calmer, open sky element of the design
The combination of these two contrasting stitches creates the dimensional, nature-inspired texture that defines the Sea to Sky aesthetic. Working yarn double on larger needles reduces overall knitting time while maintaining stitch definition and fabric integrity.
Skill Level
Designed as a beginner-friendly project, Sea to Sky uses straightforward stitch techniques and construction methods, making it accessible to knitters new to hat construction while remaining engaging for experienced makers seeking a quick, satisfying make.
Yarn Weight Specifications
This pattern accommodates both 4-ply and worsted weight yarns, offering flexibility for different yarn stashes and preferences. The doubled fingering weight construction creates a fabric suitable for cool to cold weather wear.
