Product Description
NEW PATTERN UPDATE AVAILABLE 8.10.2019. BE SURE YOU HAVE THE CURRENT UPDATE.
I saw a hat a friend of mine was wearing, a store bought hat at that (gasp I know!!) and knew I needed to knit it for myself. This is my creation based on just a glance at hers, with my own mix.
It is not an exact copy cat, but it is my version.
This hat is available in 3 different weights of yarn: Worsted, Heavy Worsted/Aran, and Bulky. All three patterns produce the same hat, but as we know, some math is a must when trying to change up patterns to use a different weight of yarn. I did the hard part and figured the math for you. This created 3 different patterns depending on the yarn you wish to use.
The pattern is labeled as a beginner pattern as it uses Knits and Purls only. Each row makes a difference; the pattern is well written and detailed to give directions per row and repeats.
Sea Forth Hat in Worsted Weight by Olive & Pearl Knits
Project Overview
The Sea Forth Hat is a beginner-level knitted hat designed by Olive & Pearl Knits and worked in worsted weight yarn. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a classic, versatile hat suitable for various head sizes, with optional embellishment possibilities. The pattern is ideal for knitters new to hat construction who want to learn fundamental techniques while creating a wearable finished object.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a fitted, round hat designed to be worn as a classic pull-on style. The Sea Forth Hat is offered in three sizes: Small (fits up to 20" circumference), Large (fits up to 22" circumference), and Extra Large (fits 23" and larger). The hat features a structured crown with decreases that taper to a finished point, making it suitable for a wide range of head sizes and preferences.
Knitting Techniques Used
The Sea Forth Hat employs several foundational knitting techniques appropriate for beginners:
- Cast On: The pattern uses the German Twisted cast on method, which creates a sturdy, elastic edge ideal for hat brims that need to stretch comfortably around the head
- Circular Knitting: The hat is worked in the round using circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming and creating seamless fabric
- Decreases: The crown shaping utilizes knit and purl decreases to gradually reduce stitches and form the hat's tapered top
- Magic Loop Method (Optional): For knitters preferring smaller circumference needles during the decrease rounds at the crown, the pattern accommodates the magic loop technique using double-pointed needles or longer circular needles
Stitches Used
The Sea Forth Hat uses a minimal stitch vocabulary, making it accessible for beginner knitters:
- Knit (K): The primary stitch that forms the fabric
- Purl (P): Used for textural variation and pattern definition
- K2tog (Knit 2 Together): A right-leaning decrease used for crown shaping
- P2tog (Purl 2 Together): A purl-based decrease for textured decrease sections
- SK2P (Slip, Knit 2 Together, Pass Slipped Stitch Over): A centered double decrease that creates a more refined crown point. This stitch involves slipping one stitch purlwise with yarn in the back, knitting the next two stitches together, then passing the slipped stitch over the resulting knit 2 together stitch
Materials and Tools Required
Yarn: The pattern calls for 50 to 100 grams of worsted weight yarn, with yardage customizable depending on the chosen size. The designer notes that solid colors and tonal yarns best showcase the stitch pattern, allowing the texture and shaping details to be clearly visible in the finished hat.
Needles: Two sets of circular needles are required:
- Size US 6 (4mm) 16-inch circular needles for the initial cast on and ribbed brim sections
- Size US 7 (4.5mm) 16-inch circular needles for the main body and crown decreases
Additional Tools: The pattern requires a stitch marker to denote the beginning of rounds, a ruler or measuring tape for checking gauge and fit, and a tapestry or darning needle for weaving in yarn ends after completion.
Optional Materials
The Sea Forth Hat pattern accommodates optional finishing touches. A faux fur pompom is recommended as a decorative crown topper, allowing knitters to personalize their finished hat. Additional stitch markers and alternative needle options—such as double-pointed needles (DPNs) in size US 7 or longer circular needles for the magic loop method—are suggested for knitters who prefer these techniques during the crown decrease rounds when stitch counts become too small for standard circular needles.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 5 stitches per 1
