Product Description
Scowloop is a mixture between scarf and cowl/loop. It is made of two parts: a loop at the one side and a tube at the other side. The shape allows two ways to wear the Scowloop: Loosely around the neck the one end pulled through the loop or wrapped around the neck like a cowl/loop. Also, due to the shape the “nice” side is always outside.
Scowloop The Original by Saskia Wolff
What is Being Made
The Scowloop is a hybrid knitted accessory that combines the functionality of both a scarf and a cowl. Designed by Saskia Wolff and published by Samkawo Knitting, this piece features a loop at one end that is large enough to pull over the head, combined with a tube section that extends from the loop. The innovative design solves a common problem with hand-knitted scarves: the ability to always display the finished right side of the fabric without requiring careful draping or styling. The Scowloop can be worn multiple ways—either as a traditional cowl by pulling it over the head, or as a scarf by wrapping the tube around the neck and tucking the ends in, creating a loop-like appearance.
Techniques Used
This knitting project employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The construction involves creating a seamless tube structure combined with an enlarged loop opening, requiring understanding of how to shape and increase stitches to achieve the proper proportions. The design emphasizes creating a finished fabric where both sides are visually appealing, eliminating the common issue where hand-knitted scarves display an inferior wrong side when worn. The pattern allows knitters to showcase their work without worrying about which side faces outward.
Stitches and Construction
While specific stitch details are not fully outlined in the provided content, the Scowloop is constructed using standard knitting stitches worked in the round or flat to create the tube and loop sections. The pattern requires attention to stitch consistency and shaping techniques to ensure the loop opening is appropriately sized for pulling over the head while maintaining the structural integrity of the tube section.
Materials
- Yarn Weight: DK weight yarn, which provides a medium thickness suitable for creating a fabric with good drape and warmth without excessive bulk
- Needles: Knitting needles appropriate for DK weight yarn (typically US 6-8 or 4-5mm), selected based on desired gauge and fabric density
Difficulty Level
This project is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic techniques and are ready to tackle projects involving shaping, increases, and three-dimensional construction. The Scowloop requires understanding of how to create a functional loop opening and maintain consistent tension throughout the tube section.
