Product Description
Reminising of my childhood is what inspired me to design a School Teacher Tea Cosy knitting pattern. I remember school teachers being nice and friendly and that they wore pretty clothes with frills, lace and floral patterns. So my teacher is wearing a lemon coloured dress edged with white and covered in pink daisy like flowers.
The school teacher has an apple in one hand and a book in the other. Her hair is a simple style and it's kept out of the way with a hair slide. She is carrying a big bag. I imagine all school teachers to have big bags so that they can take the work books home to mark them. Behind her ear she has a trusty pencil to scribble notes in the pupils book.
When I was a child in one class we had a class pet, so I have given my teacher tea cosy an escapee class pet. He's scampering behind her. Its a little hamster.
This product is the knitting pattern only; to knit your own School Teacher tea cosy.
School Teacher Tea Cosy
What is Being Made
The School Teacher Tea Cosy is a knitted tea cosy designed by TeaCosyFolk, sized to fit a 2-pint teapot or a teapot that holds 6 to 8 cups. This is a functional home accessory that provides insulation for teapots while adding decorative charm to the kitchen or dining table.
Craft and Technique
This project is created using the knitting craft. The pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond the absolute beginner level. The design uses DK weight yarn, which is a medium-weight yarn that creates a fabric with good drape and structure ideal for tea cosies.
The pattern employs several fundamental knitting techniques to shape and construct the cosy. Decreasing techniques are used throughout to create shaping, including K2tog (knit 2 stitches together) and SKPO (slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over) methods. Inc1 (increase in next stitch) is used where the pattern requires expansion, achieved by knitting in the front and back of a stitch on knit rows, or purling in the back and front on purl rows. The pattern also incorporates YFWD (yarn forward) techniques for creating decorative elements. SL1 (slip 1 stitch) is used for edge work and stitch manipulation.
An interesting construction feature involves dividing the White, Lemon, and Toy colored yarn balls into two separate balls so the yarn can be used at double thickness and knitted as a single strand. This technique creates a thicker, more insulating fabric while maintaining control over the knitting process.
Stitches Used
- Stocking Stitch – The primary stitch pattern, created by knitting one row and purling the next row alternately, producing the classic smooth V-pattern texture on the right side
- K2tog (Knit 2 Stitches Together) – A decrease stitch for shaping
- P2tog (Purl 2 Stitches Together) – A decrease stitch used on wrong-side rows
- SKPO (Slip, Knit, Pass Slipped Stitch Over) – A left-leaning decrease for shaping
- Inc1 (Increase in Next Stitch) – An increase technique for expanding the fabric
- YFWD (Yarn Forward) – Creates decorative eyelet or lace-like details
- SL1 (Slip 1 Stitch) – Used for edge definition and stitch manipulation
Materials and Tools
This pattern requires DK weight yarn in multiple colors: White, Lemon, and Toy (a playful color option). The pattern specifies 4.00mm knitting needles for the main cosy construction. The tension is set at 22 stitches and 28 rows to measure 10x10 centimeters, which is important for achieving the correct finished size.
Additional finishing materials include yarn for T&D (threading the end of yarn through remaining stitches) to close the top of the cosy securely and finish off the project.
