Product Description

OH…HERE WE GO AGAIN!!! CHICKEN SWEATERS!!

Have you seen the “Flouncy Chicken Sweaters”? Now I am excited to be releasing my favorite, the “Schoolgirl Chicken Sweaters”!!

This little plain Jane of a chicken sweater reminds me of the jumpers my mother would put on me to go to school. Sooo cute!

It has two finishing options, and two skirt options.

You can finish it with a plain edge, or a scalloped edge.

You can make the skirt with a mesh bottom or a SC bottom, before adding your edge option.

I had a friend approach me last year, because her sweet chicken Sparkle was half naked, and we had a cold winter last year. Sparkle needed some help! Her owner asked me if I could make her a chicken sweater, and I was up for the challenge!

I know these sweet and darling little sweaters are controversial, but I also know that a chicken who is in sub zero weather, that has lost their feathers could benefit from them.

School Girl Chicken Sweater

What Is Being Made

The School Girl Chicken Sweater is a charming pet clothing design created by Krissy's OTM Crochet, specifically engineered to fit chickens and other poultry. This downloadable crochet pattern produces a decorative sweater featuring a collar detail and optional button embellishments, making it both functional and stylish for backyard birds.

Craft and Technique Overview

This project is executed entirely through crochet, a fiber craft that uses a single hooked tool to create interlocking loops of yarn. Crochet is ideal for pet garments because it produces a fabric with excellent drape and flexibility, allowing for comfortable movement while maintaining structure. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that crafters should have foundational crochet knowledge before beginning this pattern.

Stitches Used

The School Girl Chicken Sweater employs a variety of fundamental and textured crochet stitches to create visual interest and structural integrity:

  • Chain (CH) – The foundational stitch used to create the base loops and foundation chains for the garment
  • Single Crochet (SC) – A tight, dense stitch that provides structure and is used extensively throughout the pattern; the gauge is measured at 12 single crochet stitches across by 15 rows in height over a 4-inch square
  • Half Double Crochet (HDC) – A medium-height stitch offering more drape than single crochet while maintaining stability
  • Double Crochet (DC) – A taller stitch that adds height and creates a more open fabric
  • Front Post Half Double Crochet (FP HDC) – A textured stitch worked around the post of the previous row's stitch, creating raised ribbed effects
  • Back Post Half Double Crochet (BP HDC) – The reverse of the front post stitch, worked around the back of the post to create dimensional texture
  • Slip Stitch (SLP ST) – Used for joining rounds and creating seamless transitions between sections
  • Scallop – A decorative element consisting of 5 half double crochet stitches worked into a single stitch, creating a shell-like edging detail

Materials and Tools

This pattern calls for worsted weight yarn, also classified as Aran or No. 4 weight, which is a medium-weight yarn suitable for creating garments with good structure and drape. Approximately 150 yards of yarn is required to complete the sweater. The recommended crochet hook size is H – 8/5.00mm, which pairs appropriately with the worsted weight yarn to achieve the specified gauge of 12 single crochet stitches and 15 rows within a 4-inch square.

Optional supplies include large buttons measuring 1 inch or larger, which can be sewn onto the finished sweater for decorative closure or embellishment purposes, adding a charming schoolgirl aesthetic to the completed pet garment.

Pattern Construction Details

The pattern incorporates thoughtful design elements that enhance both functionality and appearance. The collar features a beginning chain-2 that counts as a stitch and is designed to recede and become a mock back post detail, adding visual texture to the neckline. The use of post stitches (front and back post variations) creates ribbed sections that provide elasticity and ensure the sweater fits snugly without restricting movement. Scalloped edging adds a decorative finish to the garment, contributing to the whimsical schoolgirl theme.
