Product Description

Sargaço is the Portuguese word for sargasso, the type of seaweed for which the Sargasso Sea is famous. The Sargasso Sea sits in a still part of the ocean, providing the plants a place to grow and develop “a central point at which the floating bodies unite.” (from chapter 11 of Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys) The central panel of this shawl provides the point of stillness, while around it swirls the foam of the ocean. Slowly one begins to see the stems of seaweed emerging until the plants fully form along the bottom edge. Sparkling out from among the fronds are beads, highlighting the waves.

Yarn: 800 (1,200) yards/730 (869) meters of merino fingering weight yarn that knits up to 8 sts/inch.

Samples: Indigodragonfly ‘MCS Sock’, (400 yards/365 meters; 75% merino, 15% cashmere, 10% silk). 2 skeins in Bunnies, Bunnies, It Must be Bunnies, 8/0 Toho seed beads, Lt. Amythest AB (tb8r166).

Indigodragonfly ‘MerGoat Sock’, (400 yards/365 meters; 80% merino, 10% cashmere, 10% nylon). 3 skeins in 20,000 Lawyers Under the Sea, 8/0 Toho seed beads, Frosted Transparent Teal (tb8r7bdf).

Sargaço Shawl by Janelle Martin

What Is Being Made

The Sargaço Shawl is an advanced knitting project inspired by the Sargasso Sea and its distinctive floating seaweed ecosystem. The name references the Portuguese word "sargaço," meaning sargasso seaweed, which gives the Sargasso Sea its character. This shawl design translates oceanic imagery into knitted form, featuring a central stillness point surrounded by dynamic movement that gradually reveals seaweed forms along the bottom edge. The finished shawl is available in two sizes: a Large Shawl measuring 78 inches wide by 33 inches deep when stretched and blocked, or a Regular Shawl measuring 56 inches wide by 22 inches deep.

Design Inspiration and Concept

The Sargaço Shawl draws conceptual depth from Jean Rhys's novel Wide Sargasso Sea, specifically chapter 11, which describes how "floating bodies unite" at a central point. This literary reference shapes the shawl's construction: a central panel provides visual stillness while the surrounding design swirls with oceanic foam. As the pattern progresses outward and downward, knitters gradually see seaweed stems emerge until the plants fully form along the bottom edge, creating a narrative arc in the knitted fabric.

Knitting Techniques Used

This advanced-level knitting project employs circular needles to manage the expanding fabric as the shawl grows outward from its central point. The construction technique creates a dynamic interplay between stillness and movement, requiring knitters to manage increasing stitch counts as the design expands. The pattern incorporates beadwork integrated into the knitted fabric, with beads sparkling among the seaweed fronds to highlight the movement of the plants among waves. This combination of knitting and bead placement adds textural and visual dimension to the finished piece.

Stitches and Stitch Work

While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern documentation provided, the Sargaço Shawl employs stitch techniques suitable for advanced knitters. The gauge is 21 stitches and 25.5 rows to 4 inches (10 cm) over the pattern stitch, indicating a moderately dense fabric. The pattern requires careful attention to stitch counts as the shawl expands from its central panel, with the progression from central stillness through foam swirls to defined seaweed forms suggesting the use of varied stitch patterns and increases to create visual texture and movement.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Sargaço Shawl is designed to be worked on US #5 (3.75 mm) circular needles, with a recommended needle length of 32 to 40 inches (80 to 100 cm), or a size adjusted to obtain the specified gauge. The pattern accommodates yarn weights of 3-ply and 4-ply, offering flexibility in yarn selection while maintaining the intended drape and finished dimensions. The pattern also requires beads for embellishment, which are integrated throughout the seaweed sections of the design to enhance the oceanic aesthetic.

Skill Level and Difficulty

Classified as an advanced knitting project, the Sargaço Shawl is suited for experienced knitters comfortable with complex pattern work, circular needle techniques, and bead integration. The expanding construction from a central point, combined with the need to manage increasing stitch counts and incorporate beadwork, requires strong foundational knitting skills and the ability to read and follow detailed pattern instructions.
