Sardegna Bag in Hoooked Zpagetti – Crochet Pattern Summary
The Sardegna Bag is a crocheted tote-style bag designed using Hoooked Zpagetti, the iconic super chunky recycled textile yarn. This intermediate-level crochet pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and produces a sturdy, stylish shoulder bag with a structured base and comfortable handles. Thanks to the super chunky weight of Zpagetti, the bag works up quickly and results in a thick, tactile fabric with beautiful natural variation in texture and colour.
What Is Being Made
The finished project is a rounded, structured handbag or tote crocheted in the round from a pre-formed base upward. The bag reaches approximately 25 centimetres in height and is finished with two attached shoulder handles and an optional decorative tassel. The design is simple yet striking, making excellent use of Zpagetti's bold texture and visual character.
Materials Required
- Yarn: 1 roll of Hoooked Zpagetti super chunky recycled textile yarn
- Hook: 12 mm crochet hook
- Notions: A Manico MA 123 bag base (pre-punched for crochet attachment), two Manico shoulder handles (hengsels), a large-eye tapestry needle (stopnaald)
- Optional: A key ring or carabiner clip for attaching a tassel made from leftover Zpagetti yarn
Techniques Used
- Working in the round (spiral rounds) – the body of the bag is crocheted continuously upward in a spiral, eliminating the need for slip-stitch joins at the end of each round
- Attaching yarn to a pre-formed bag base – a length of Zpagetti is threaded loosely through the pre-punched holes of the MA 123 bag base using a whip stitch (slingersteek) to create a foundation loop around the entire perimeter
- Finishing and weaving in ends – all loose ends are secured with a firm knot and woven in on the inside of the bag using the large-eye needle
- Sewing on handles – the Manico shoulder handles are sewn firmly to both sides of the bag using a separate length of Zpagetti and a whip stitch (slingersteek) with the tapestry needle
- Optional tassel making – leftover Zpagetti is wrapped around a card approximately 10 cm wide, then tied and cut to form a decorative tassel attached via a key ring or carabiner
Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (losse steek / ketting) – used in the foundation and turning chains
- Slip stitch (halve vaste steek) – worked as a final round around the top edge of the bag to create a firm, neat finish
- Single crochet / double crochet UK (vaste steek) – the primary stitch used throughout the entire body of the bag, worked in continuous spiral rounds
- Whip stitch / overcast stitch (slingersteek) – used both to attach the yarn to the bag base and to sew the handles securely in place
- Starting loop (opzetlus) – used to begin the crochet work
Construction Method
The bag is built in three clear stages. Step one involves preparing the Manico MA 123 bag base by threading a generous length of Zpagetti through its pre-punched perimeter holes using a whip stitch, then crocheting a single crochet stitch into each loop created around the base. This forms the foundation round from which the bag body grows.
Step two involves crocheting the bag body upward in continuous spiral rounds of single crochet for approximately 18 to 20 rounds, achieving a height of around 25 centimetres. Because Hoooked
