Santa Suit Mug Coasters Crochet Pattern
What Is Being Made
The Santa Suit Mug Coasters are festive holiday table accessories designed by Marie Segares for Underground Crafter. These crochet coasters feature a cheerful Santa suit design and are sized at approximately 6.25 inches (16 cm) square, making them perfect for protecting table surfaces during holiday gatherings. Each coaster works up quickly, making this an ideal project for adding seasonal charm to any home.
Craft and Technique
This is a crochet project classified as beginner level, meaning it is accessible to those new to crochet while still producing professional-looking results. The pattern employs color changing techniques to create the Santa suit design. Crafters will learn to change colors throughout the project and crochet over yarn tails as they work, which is an efficient method for managing color transitions and finishing details without excessive weaving in of ends.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches appropriate for beginner-level work:
- Chain (ch) – used to create the foundation and structure of the coaster
- Single crochet (sc) – the primary stitch that forms the fabric of the coaster, providing a dense and sturdy base suitable for a functional coaster
The gauge is 16 single crochet stitches over 4 inches (10 cm) in width. The pattern notes that exact gauge is not critical for this project, offering flexibility for crafters with varying tension.
Materials and Tools
The coasters are worked in worsted weight yarn, specifically Loops and Threads Everyday Cotton yarn, which is 100% cotton. This natural fiber choice makes the coasters absorbent and practical for their functional purpose. Three colors are required to create the Santa suit design:
- Color A (CA) – White (27002)
- Color B (CB) – Tomato red (27011)
- Color C (CC) – Black (27003)
For one coaster, approximately 10 yards (9 meters) each of white and black yarn and 40 yards (36.5 meters) of red yarn are needed. A US Size H-8/5 mm crochet hook is used to achieve the specified gauge, or crafters may adjust hook size as needed. A yarn needle is required for finishing and weaving in any remaining yarn ends.
Project Format
This pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF, making it convenient for digital access and printing. The downloadable format allows crafters to reference the pattern on their devices or create a printed copy to keep at their work station while crocheting.
