Sandworm's Journey Beanie Knitting Pattern

What is Being Made

The Sandworm's Journey Beanie is a women's knitted hat designed by Marie Segares and published by Underground Crafter. This intermediate-level knitting pattern creates a finished beanie with a circumference of 20 inches (51 cm) and a depth of 7 inches (18 cm) from crown to base. The design draws inspiration from Frank Herbert's Dune series, with cable patterns that evoke the appearance of a sandstorm, particularly when worked in warm orange tones.

Techniques and Stitches Used

This pattern features cable knitting as its primary decorative technique. The cables are strategically placed throughout the beanie to create visual texture reminiscent of swirling sand patterns. Cable knitting involves crossing groups of stitches over one another to create twisted, rope-like effects that add depth and dimension to the finished fabric. The combination of cables with the base stitch pattern creates an engaging visual design suitable for an intermediate knitter who has experience with cable techniques.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern calls for Malabrigo Rios yarn in the colorway Glazed Carrot, which provides the warm orange hue that complements the sandstorm-inspired cable design. One skein is required to complete the beanie. Malabrigo Rios is an aran to worsted weight yarn, offering approximately 210 yards (192 meters) per 3.5 ounces (100 grams). This yarn weight range provides good stitch definition for displaying cable work while maintaining a comfortable drape and warmth suitable for a winter beanie.

Skill Level and Pattern Origin

Rated as an intermediate difficulty pattern, the Sandworm's Journey Beanie is appropriate for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle cable techniques. The pattern was originally designed for the Knotty Knitters for Autism 2013 Calendar, making it a charity-inspired design with a meaningful background.
