Salinger Hat by Justyna Lorkowska

What is Being Made

The Salinger Hat is a knitted hat designed by Justyna Lorkowska, created as a one-size-fits-most design that stretches to fit head circumferences of 54-56 cm (21-22 inches). The finished hat measures approximately 20 cm (8.25 inches) from brim to top, making it a classic, close-fitting style suitable for various head sizes.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create its structure and visual interest. The pattern utilizes cable knitting, a foundational technique where stitches are crossed over one another to create raised, twisted patterns. The specific cable used in this design is a 2/2 left-leaning cable (2/2 LC), which involves slipping 2 stitches onto a cable needle, holding it to the front, knitting 2 stitches from the main needle, then knitting the 2 stitches from the cable needle. This creates the characteristic braided appearance common in cable-knit hats.

The hat is worked in the round using circular needles, a technique that allows for seamless construction and continuous spiral knitting. Decreasing stitches is employed to shape the crown of the hat, tapering it to a fitted finish at the top. The pattern also incorporates make-one increases worked purlwise (m1P), which lift the running strand between stitches and purl into the back of the loop to create new stitches without visible holes.

Stitches Used

The Salinger Hat utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined in strategic ways:

  • Knit stitch (k) - the primary stitch forming the base fabric
  • Purl stitch (p) - used to create texture and definition, particularly in combination with knit stitches
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog) - a right-leaning decrease used to shape the crown
  • Slip, slip, knit (ssk) - a left-leaning decrease that pairs with k2tog for balanced shaping
  • Make one purlwise (m1P) - an increase stitch that adds stitches while maintaining pattern continuity
  • Cable stitches - specifically the 2/2 LC cable that creates the textured pattern throughout the hat

Materials and Tools

The Salinger Hat requires worsted-weight yarn, with the pattern calling for 1 skein of Donegal Wool Spinning Company by Studio Donegal. This yarn is 100% wool, providing warmth, elasticity, and durability ideal for a fitted hat. One skein contains 200 meters (218 yards) per 100 grams, offering ample yardage for this project. The yarn shown in the pattern is displayed in color B 3615.

Knitting needles required include a 4.5 mm (US size #7) circular needle, which accommodates the worsted-weight yarn and allows for the seamless in-the-round construction. The pattern also calls for double-pointed needles (dpns), typically used when the stitch count becomes too small for the circular needle during the crown decreases, allowing the knitter to complete the final stitches and close the top of the hat.

Additional tools referenced include a cable needle (cn), essential for working the cable stitches that define this hat's appearance and texture.
