Sailor Sweater by JustJussi
What is Being Made
The Sailor Sweater is a cute long-sleeved knitted top designed for infants and toddlers. This original knitwear design by Justine Turner is available in five size options to fit children aged 3 months through 24 months, with chest measurements ranging from 40.5 cm to 50.5 cm. The sweater is worked in one piece, making it an efficient construction method that minimizes seaming.
Sizes and Fit
This pattern includes five graduated sizes:
- 3 months: 40.5 cm chest
- 6 months: 43 cm chest
- 12 months: 45.5 cm chest
- 18 months: 48 cm chest
- 24 months: 50.5 cm chest
Techniques Used
The Sailor Sweater employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for an intermediate-level knitter. The garment is constructed using a one-piece knitting method, which streamlines the building process and reduces the need for seaming multiple components together. The pattern incorporates the 3-needle bind off technique, a professional finishing method where stitches from two needles are held with right sides together and bound off simultaneously using a third needle. This creates a strong, neat seam and is commonly used for shoulder closures and other structural joins in knitwear.
Stitches Used
The pattern utilizes basic knitting stitches including knit and purl stitches. The finishing techniques include cast off (bind off) knitwise and purlwise, allowing the knitter to match the stitch pattern at the edges for a professional appearance. These fundamental stitches form the foundation of the sweater's construction.
Materials and Yarn
The Sailor Sweater is worked in sport weight or light DK yarn, a versatile weight category ideal for baby garments. The pattern requires approximately 166 meters (181 yards) to 50 grams (1.76 ounces) of yarn. The designer recommends using wool or wool blend yarns and notes that both DK wool at 137 meters to 50 grams and sport weight options at 166 meters to 50 grams have been successfully tested for this design. The choice of yarn weight and fiber content ensures the finished sweater will have appropriate drape, warmth, and durability for infant wear.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond the absolute beginner level. The one-piece construction and 3-needle bind off technique require familiarity with standard knitting methods and the ability to manage multiple stitches simultaneously.
