Product Description
“Sail away with me, What will be will be”
My Sail Away Beanie was inspired by the lyrics of one of my favourite songs by one of my favourite artists, David Gray. To me, the song is about just wanting to be with your one true love no matter what life may throw at you, despite what has gone before and what you may yet face. The lines above particularity resonate because of our taking a giant leap into moving back to Shetland after so many years away. The hat consists of bands of several nautically inspired colour work motifs. The ship itself is based loosely on The Swan, a restored sailing boat which was originally used for fishing for herring here in Shetland in the early 1900s. She is the last of her kind and has now been restored by The Swan Trust, an army of volunteers. She’s now used for boat trips and youth sail training excursions.
Sail Away Beanie by Olach Designs
Project Overview
The Sail Away Beanie is an intermediate-level knitted hat inspired by the lyrics of David Gray's "Sail Away," reflecting themes of love, commitment, and new beginnings. This downloadable knitting pattern features nautically inspired colorwork bands that celebrate Shetland's maritime heritage and the historic sailing vessel The Swan.
Design Features and Inspiration
The beanie incorporates multiple bands of colorwork motifs with a nautical theme. The central design element is a ship motif based loosely on The Swan, a restored Shetland fishing boat originally used for herring fishing in the early 1900s. The Swan is the last of her kind and has been restored by The Swan Trust, a volunteer organization that now uses the vessel for boat trips and youth sail training excursions. The colorwork bands create a visually striking pattern that honors this iconic piece of Shetland maritime history.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs colorwork knitting techniques to create the nautical motifs and decorative bands throughout the hat. The use of multiple colors in structured bands requires stranding or weaving techniques typical of Fair Isle and Shetland knitting traditions. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should be comfortable with reading colorwork charts, managing multiple yarn colors, and maintaining even tension across color changes.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The Sail Away Beanie is designed to be knitted in 4-ply yarn weight, which provides excellent stitch definition for displaying the colorwork motifs clearly. The pattern specifies Jamieson's of Shetland yarn, a traditional choice that connects the project to its Shetland inspiration and ensures authentic color options suited to the nautical theme. The 4-ply weight allows for detailed colorwork while maintaining a comfortable, wearable fabric suitable for a beanie.
Skill Level
Rated as intermediate difficulty, this pattern is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle colorwork techniques. Prior experience with basic shaping, gauge management, and color changes is recommended for successful completion.
