Product Description
Pattern Notes: This pattern is for a simple beginner-friendly Tunisian crochet Samosa. Saeed means happy in Arabic so I thought that would be the perfect name for this little guy because he makes me so happy! Samosas are an important food in my house, they take me back to my childhood when my mom used to make Samosas in preparation for Ramadan. I decided to share a cute amigurumi inspired by this sentiment as the month of Ramadan has just started! I’ve also included a rough recipe for the Samosas over on my blog!
It’s the perfect beginner project for a cute pretend play toy for your little ones! Each Samosa is made with approximately 31 yards which means you can make 3 samosas from just one skein of yarn.
Saeed The Samosa Amigurumi by Noorain Nizami
Project Overview
Saeed The Samosa is a beginner-friendly amigurumi toy designed by Noorain Nizami. This downloadable crochet pattern creates a charming stuffed samosa character, perfect for crafters new to amigurumi construction. The finished toy measures 5 inches long by 2.5 inches wide, making it an ideal small decorative piece or gift item.
What is Being Made
This pattern creates an amigurumi samosa—a three-dimensional stuffed toy representation of the traditional triangular pastry. Named Saeed, which means "happy" in Arabic, this playful character combines the appeal of food-themed toys with cultural significance. The samosa is constructed as a single cohesive piece with embroidered facial features to bring personality to the finished creation.
Crochet Techniques Used
The pattern utilizes Tunisian crochet, a hybrid technique that combines elements of crochet and knitting for a distinctive fabric texture. Specifically, the pattern employs Tunisian simple stitch, which creates a dense, fabric-like material ideal for amigurumi construction. This technique provides structural integrity for stuffed toys while remaining accessible to beginners. The gauge is 4 stitches over 3 rows in Tunisian simple stitch, producing a 1 by 1 inch square.
Stitches and Construction Methods
- Tunisian simple stitch as the primary stitch throughout the pattern
- Embroidery stitches for facial features, including mouth details in black or red scrap yarn
- Optional embroidered eyes using black scrap yarn, or alternatively, safety eyes for added dimension
- Stuffing techniques to create the three-dimensional form
Materials Required
Yarn: Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran in soft fudge colorway. The pattern requires 32 yards of this aran weight (size 4) yarn. This yarn is 100% cotton, providing a soft, breathable finish suitable for toys. Additional scrap yarn in black or red is needed for embroidering the mouth, with optional black scrap yarn for embroidered eyes.
Tools and Notions: A size I (5.5 mm) Tunisian crochet hook is required for this project. Additional supplies include a yarn needle for weaving in ends and embroidery work, scissors, a measuring tape, polyfil stuffing for creating the three-dimensional form, and 2 safety eyes measuring 12 mm with washers for secure attachment.
Skill Level
This pattern is classified as beginner-level, making it an excellent introduction to amigurumi and Tunisian crochet techniques. The straightforward construction and simple stitch repetition allow new crafters to build confidence while creating a finished toy with personality and charm.
