Product Description
This is a great lightweight scarf with a pocket for each hand at the ends! It's smooshy, even though it's made on size US 7 knitting needles with Berroco's Ultra Wool Fine.
The pockets are in opposite colors on each end of scarf. They are knitted in and folded up, then seamed closed on the sides with yarn in matching color and overhand stitches.
The wool is fluffy enough to fill the spaces nicely and durable to hold up through a cold winter. Use two colors of good contrast. The colorwork on the center of the scarf is striped garter stitch...easy peasy. Then on both ends are running rabbits in intarsia or duplicate stitch. The rabbits are worked from an easy to read chart with full directions. Appropriate for children through adults.
Runny Rabbit Knit Scarf by Sharon Mooney
What is Being Made
The Runny Rabbit is a block scarf pattern designed by Sharon Mooney, suitable for intermediate knitters. This scarf measures 7 inches (17.8 centimeters) wide and 62 inches (157.5 centimeters) long when blocked to finished dimensions. The design features a two-color construction, creating visual interest through contrasting blocks of knitted fabric.
Yarn and Materials
This project requires approximately two skeins of yarn in complementary colors. The pattern specifies Berroco Ultra Wool Fine, a 100% superwash wool yarn available in 400-yard (366-meter) skeins weighing 3.5 ounces (100 grams) each. The two colors used are grey (color 53108) and navy (color 53152), though knitters may substitute other 4-ply weight yarns of similar yardage and fiber content.
Additional materials needed include US 7 (4.5 millimeter) circular knitting needles measuring 24 inches (60 centimeters) in length, a yarn needle or large embroidery needle for weaving in ends, and optional yarn bobbins for managing the two-color work.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Runny Rabbit scarf is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate-level crafters. The primary stitch used is stockinette stitch (also called stocking stitch), which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a recognizable V-pattern on the right side.
The pattern incorporates the following core knitting techniques and abbreviations:
- Cast on (Co) – The foundation row that creates initial stitches on the needle
- Knit (K) – The basic knit stitch that forms the primary fabric structure
- Purl (P) – The reverse of the knit stitch, used in combination to create texture and pattern
- Place stitch marker (Pm) – A technique for tracking pattern repeats and sections
- Bind off (Bo) – The finishing technique that secures stitches and prevents unraveling
- Right side (Rs) and Wrong side (Ws) – Directional references for proper pattern orientation
The two-color block construction likely involves carrying yarn colors across rows or using bobbins to manage separate color sections, a technique common in intarsia or color-block knitting designs.
Gauge and Blocking
The pattern specifies a gauge of 5 stitches and 6.5 rows per 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) measured over stockinette stitch on a flat surface before blocking. Achieving proper gauge is essential for the scarf to reach its intended finished dimensions. Blocking the completed scarf to the specified measurements ensures even fabric, proper color definition between blocks, and optimal drape.
