What is Being Made

The Rowan Cowl is a knitted neck warmer designed as a one-size cowl from the Wildwood collection. This intermediate-level project creates a versatile accessory suitable for everyday wear, featuring a sophisticated colorwork design that showcases multiple coordinated hues inspired by natural tones.

Knitting Techniques Used

This cowl employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its finished design. The project begins with a ribbed bottom welt, which provides elasticity and structure at the base of the cowl. The construction uses the fairisle technique, a traditional colorwork method that allows multiple colors to be incorporated into a single round of knitting. This technique creates intricate patterned fabric by carrying unused yarn colors across the back of the work. The cowl is worked in the round using circular needles, which eliminates the need for seaming and creates a seamless, continuous tube of fabric ideal for a neck accessory.

Stitches Used

The Rowan Cowl utilizes fundamental knitting stitches combined in strategic ways:

• Knit stitch (K): The primary stitch used throughout the colorwork sections and main body
• Purl stitch (P): Combined with knit stitches to create the 1x1 ribbed texture at the bottom welt, and used in a transition round between the welt and main pattern
• 1x1 Ribbing: Created by alternating knit and purl stitches in each round, this elastic texture appears in the initial 7 rounds and provides a fitted edge

The pattern repeat measures 20 stitches and is repeated 11 times around the circumference, creating a balanced, symmetrical design across the cowl's width.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Rowan Cowl is designed to be worked in 4-ply yarn weight, a lightweight yet durable yarn suitable for creating detailed colorwork. The pattern calls for 10 coordinated colors from the British Breeds collection, each requiring 1 x 25 gram ball:

Two circular needles in different sizes are required to complete this project. The 2¾mm (US 2) circular needle is used for the initial ribbed welt, where the smaller needle size creates a tighter, more elastic fabric. The 3¼mm (US 3) circular needle is then introduced for the main fairisle pattern sections, allowing the fabric to open up slightly and accommodate the colorwork technique. Circular needles are essential for this in-the-round construction, eliminating seams and creating a professional finish suitable for a cowl.
