What is Being Made

The Rosi Stirnband is a wide knitted headband designed to provide excellent ear coverage while featuring decorative Celtic braid patterns that wrap around the entire head. This is a practical accessory suitable for cold weather and winter wear, crafted from pure merino wool for comfort and warmth.

Construction Method

This headband is worked horizontally (quergestrickt), meaning it is knitted from side to side rather than in the round. This construction method offers a significant practical advantage: the finished size can be easily adjusted to accommodate larger head circumferences simply by knitting additional rows before binding off. The pattern is designed for a head circumference of 52 cm (20.5 inches), with finished dimensions of 9.5 cm (3.7 inches) wide by 46 cm (18.1 inches) long.

Stitches and Techniques Used

The primary stitch pattern features two interlocking Celtic braid motifs (zwei verschlungene Kelten-Zopf-Muster) that run continuously around the headband. The base fabric is worked in stockinette stitch (glatt rechts), which provides a smooth foundation for the cable patterns. Cable techniques are essential for creating the Celtic braid effects that give this headband its distinctive visual appeal.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: Katia Merino 100% (100% superwash merino wool, 102 meters per 50 grams): 1 skein of 50 grams in color 55 turquoise
  • Needles: Size 4 (3.5mm) needles for main knitting, plus one additional size 4 cable needle for working the Celtic braid stitches
  • Gauge: 24 stitches and 34 rows in stockinette stitch on size 4 needles equals 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches)

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as advanced (Fortgeschritten). The complexity stems from working multiple interlocking cable patterns while maintaining proper gauge and stitch accuracy. Knitters should pay careful attention to achieving an exact gauge match, as the pattern notes that any deviation will affect the final measurements and may result in insufficient yarn for completion.

Pattern Notes

The designer emphasizes the importance of checking gauge precisely before beginning, as variations will impact both the dimensions of the finished headband and the total yardage required. The use of superwash merino wool makes this headband practical for regular wear and easy care during washing.
