Robot Toy by Natty Knits
What is Being Made
The Robot is a knitted toy design created by Clare Doornbos of Natty Knits. This intermediate-level project produces a finished stuffed toy approximately 8 inches tall, perfect for a decorative or play piece. The toy features a structured body with articulated limbs, eyes, and a charming mechanical aesthetic.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several advanced knitting techniques to achieve its dimensional shape:
- Short Row Shaping – The primary construction method used to create the Robot's body. This technique involves turning the work mid-row and creating intentional yarn loops under stitches. When knitting back over these loops, they must be knitted together with the stitch above them to prevent holes and maintain fabric integrity.
- Sideways Construction – The body is knitted horizontally rather than from bottom to top, allowing for strategic shaping and placement of limbs.
- Static Markers – Yarn scraps are placed at specific points during knitting to mark the future attachment positions for arms and legs, ensuring proper alignment and symmetry.
Stitches Used
Stockinette Stitch forms the primary fabric of the Robot. This classic knit stitch creates a smooth, flat surface with a distinctive V-pattern on the right side, providing an ideal base for the toy's clean, geometric appearance.
Materials and Tools
The Robot requires worsted-weight yarn in two colors: approximately 80 yards in a main color and approximately 40 yards in a contrasting color. Construction uses US size 5 (3.75 mm) double-pointed needles or the size needed to achieve the specified gauge of 5 stitches and 7 rows per inch in Stockinette Stitch. A US size 4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook is included for finishing details. Additional materials include fiberfill for stuffing, buttons or felt pieces for eyes, yarn scraps for stitch markers and stitch holders, and a tapestry needle for seaming and weaving in ends.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle shaping techniques. The short row shaping method requires careful attention to technique and understanding of how yarn loops interact with standard stitches, but detailed instructions and photographic references are provided to guide the crafter through this process.
