Product Description
Designed on a recent trip to Scotland, River Ness socks are named for the river that flows through Inverness. Just like their swiftly moving namesake, these socks, with their easily memorized lace pattern, will fly off your needles.
River Ness socks are available as both toe up and cuff down. Both patterns are included with your purchase. Instructions are both written and charted.
The stitch count does change from leg to foot. If you are afraid of crazy pooling, be sure to use a solid or semi-solid yarn!

River Ness Socks by Allison Janocha
What Is Being Made
River Ness is an advanced knitted sock pattern designed by Allison Janocha. These are custom-fit socks with an 8-inch foot and leg circumference, featuring a customizable foot length to accommodate individual measurements. The pattern is ideal for experienced sock knitters seeking a refined, tailored sock design.
Knitting Techniques
This pattern employs several intermediate to advanced knitting techniques suited for experienced crafters. The socks are constructed using the magic loop method with circular needles, allowing knitters to work seamlessly in the round without requiring multiple needle transitions. The pattern is also compatible with two circular needles for those who prefer that construction method. Experienced sock knitters can adapt the pattern to work on double-pointed needles (dpns), with specific stitch distribution guidelines provided: 16 stitches on needles 1 and 3, and 17 stitches on needles 2 and 4 for the leg portion, with 16 stitches on each needle for the foot.
The design incorporates yarn overs on Round 1 at the foot edges, which may require adjustment depending on yarn characteristics and personal preference. The pattern provides guidance for managing stitch placement to prevent oversized yarn overs.
Stitches Used
The primary stitch structure is stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic appearance characteristic of quality sock knitting. The pattern integrates yarn overs as a decorative or functional element in the foot construction, adding visual interest and texture variation to the finished socks.
Materials Required
- Yarn: Fingering weight sock yarn, 440 yards (400 meters). The sample shown uses Yarn Love Juliet in the Sunshowers colorway, a blend of 80% merino wool and 20% nylon, available exclusively from Smitten Yarns. This fiber composition provides durability, elasticity, and moisture-wicking properties ideal for sock wear.
- Needles: US Size 0 (2.0 mm) circular needles for magic loop construction, or the appropriate size needed to achieve the specified gauge. Alternatives include two circular needles or five double-pointed needles for knitters who prefer those methods.
- Notions: A tapestry needle for weaving in ends, blocking supplies for finishing, and markers if desired for tracking pattern repeats or stitch placement.
Gauge and Finishing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 36 stitches and 52 rows per 4 inches (10 cm) in stockinette stitch. Achieving this gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions. Proper blocking is recommended to set the stitches and ensure an even, professional finish on the completed socks.
