Ripples in the Sand Knitted Shawl by ElizabethV

Project Overview

Ripples in the Sand is a knitted shawl design created by ElizabethV Designs. This intermediate-level project produces a generous triangular shawl with a wingspan of 109.5 inches (278 cm) and a height of 19 inches (48 cm), making it an elegant accessory suitable for layering or draping.

Craft and Construction Method

This shawl is created using the knitting craft, worked in the round from a center point outward. The construction method employs systematic increases worked on every right side row, resulting in 6 increases per row. This structured increase pattern creates the characteristic rippling effect that gives the design its name. Knitters work increase stitches directly into the established stitch pattern as they progress, allowing the pattern to develop organically throughout the piece.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary stitch pattern used in this design is the Garter Ridge Pattern, which creates texture and visual interest through alternating knit rows. The pattern incorporates a specialized decrease technique called P2tog-drop, where the knitter purls the next stitch together with the first yarn over while dropping the second yarn over. This unique stitch manipulation contributes to the shawl's distinctive rippled appearance and requires attention to detail during execution.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This shawl is designed for 4-ply weight yarn, offering a balance between drape and structure. The pattern calls for specific yarnage and fiber content:

  • Main Color (MC): Round Mountain Fibers Entomology Club Semisolid in Dragon Fly Blue (100% Superwash Merino, 100 grams/400 yards) – 2 skeins required
  • Contrast Color (CC): Polka Dot Sheep Tenderfoot 80/20 in Sand Dollar (80% Merino/20% Nylon blend, 100 grams/400 yards) – 1 skein required

The Superwash Merino in the main color provides softness and easy care, while the Merino and Nylon blend of the contrast color adds durability and subtle texture variation. The two-color combination creates visual depth and emphasizes the ripple pattern throughout the finished piece.

Tools and Equipment

Knitters will need the following needles and notions to complete this project:

  • US 4 (3.5 mm) 32-inch circular needle as the primary working needle
  • US 4 (3.5 mm) double point needles for working the center and any sections requiring smaller circumferences
  • Stitch markers and removable markers for tracking pattern repeats and increases
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing

Gauge and Fit

The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 40 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in the Garter Ridge Pattern. Checking gauge before beginning is essential for achieving the intended finished measurements. The shawl is designed in one size, with the generous wingspan making it suitable for a wide range of body sizes and wearing preferences.

Skill Level Considerations

While labeled as intermediate level, this project involves working with multiple colors, managing increases across pattern rows, and executing specialized stitches like the P2tog-drop decrease. Knitters should be comfortable with circular needle techniques, color changes, and following complex stitch patterns. The systematic increase structure and pattern integration make this an excellent project for advancing knitting skills.
