Ripple Cardigan by Jo Sharp
What is Being Made
The Ripple Cardigan is a lightweight, stretch-to-fit cardigan designed for quick knitting. This garment features a distinctive rippled texture effect throughout the body, creating visual interest while maintaining a wearable, comfortable fit. The cardigan is constructed from the bottom up and finished with a yoke at the top, making it an efficient project for knitters of various skill levels.
Knitting Techniques
This cardigan employs a bottom-up construction method, where the body is knitted first before shaping progresses toward the yoke at the top. The rippling effect that gives the cardigan its name is achieved through strategic shaping and stitch manipulation. The garment is designed as a stretch-to-fit item, meaning the fabric has inherent elasticity that allows it to conform to the wearer's body. Note that bodice measurements are taken underarm where the fabric is not ruffled, as the rippling effect distorts standard measurements.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette Stitch (St st) — the primary stitch forming the main body of the cardigan
- Ribbing — worked in alternating knit and purl stitches (K1, P1 pattern) at the edges for structure and elasticity
- Increases — strategically placed increases at sleeve edges to shape the garment and create the ripple effect
Materials
The Ripple Cardigan is knitted using Jo Sharp Mulberry Silk Georgette yarn in the Infinite colorway (code 768). This is a sport weight yarn, making it ideal for lightweight garments with excellent drape. The project requires only 4 to 5 balls of 50g depending on size, making it an economical choice. Knitting is worked on large 6.00mm needles, which contributes to the quick knitting pace and airy fabric characteristic of this design. The mulberry silk content provides a luxurious feel and natural sheen, while the georgette construction ensures breathability and comfort.
Sizing and Fit
The Ripple Cardigan is available in four sizes: A, B, C, and D. The pictured model wears size A (size 8) and is shown in a size A garment. Finished underarm measurements range from 37cm to 48cm across the size range, providing options for various body types and preferred fit levels.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it accessible to knitters new to cardigan construction. The straightforward bottom-up method and use of basic stitches mean that even less experienced knitters can successfully complete this project and create a professional-looking garment.
