Riley Blake Wonderland Quilt Pattern by Jina Barney – Free Downloadable PDF
The Riley Blake Wonderland pattern, designed by Jina Barney and available as a free downloadable PDF from Riley Blake Designs, produces a cheerful and graphic finished quilt measuring 62" x 69". Built around a classic Pinwheel Block with a finished size of 6" x 6", this project is rated as beginner-friendly, making it an excellent introduction to foundational quilting skills while still delivering a visually striking result. The pattern draws on the festive, nature-inspired Wonderland fabric collection from Riley Blake, featuring trees, poinsettias, berries, and stripes in a coordinated palette of blues, greens, reds, and crisp whites.
What Is Being Made
This pattern produces a lap or throw-sized quilt at 62" x 69", constructed from 30 Pinwheel Blocks set together with sashing, posts, and borders. The overall design creates a rhythmic, spinning visual movement across the quilt surface, enhanced by the contrast between the assorted print fabrics and the clean white solid background. The combination of structured sashing strips and accent posts gives the layout a polished, organized appearance that suits both holiday and everyday home décor.
Techniques Used
- Half Square Triangle (HST) construction: The foundational technique in this pattern. A pencil line is drawn diagonally from corner to corner on the wrong side of 4" clean white solid squares, which are then layered right sides together with 4" assorted print squares. Stitching is sewn ¼" on each side of the pencil line, and the unit is cut along the drawn line to yield two Half Square Triangles per pair. This method is one of the most widely used techniques in quilting for producing accurate, consistent diagonal seams.
- Squaring up HSTs: After pressing, each Half Square Triangle is trimmed to a precise 3½" square to ensure uniformity before block assembly — a critical step for maintaining accurate seam alignment throughout the quilt.
- Pinwheel Block assembly: Four Half Square Triangles are arranged and sewn together in a rotating configuration to create the signature pinwheel motif. A total of 120 Half Square Triangles are made to produce the 30 Pinwheel Blocks required.
- Sashing and posts construction: 1½" x 6½" bleached denim solid rectangles are sewn between Pinwheel Blocks to form horizontal rows, with each row containing 5 Pinwheel Blocks and 6 sashing rectangles. Six of these rows (labeled Row A) are assembled. Posts — small accent squares cut from the red poinsettia fabric — are incorporated at sashing intersections to add color detail and visual rhythm.
- Straight seam piecing: All construction uses standard ¼" seam allowances with pieces sewn right sides together, consistent with traditional quilting practice.
- Pressing: Proper pressing of seams is referenced throughout, an essential technique for achieving flat, accurate blocks and smooth quilt assembly.
Stitches Used
- Straight stitch: Used throughout for all piecing, including the diagonal stitching lines on HST units and all block, sashing, and border assembly seams.
- ¼" seam allowance stitch lines: All measurements in the pattern include a ¼" seam allowance, which is the quilting industry standard and is maintained consistently across every step of construction.
