Riley Blake Whispering Meadow Quilt Pattern by Jina Barney – Free Downloadable PDF
The Whispering Meadow quilt pattern, designed by Jina Barney and published by Riley Blake Designs under their Stitch Studios – Designs by Cyndi Walker imprint, is a charming and sophisticated quilting project that results in a finished quilt measuring 44" x 52". This free downloadable PDF is rated advanced in difficulty and requires a solid foundation in quilting technique and terminology before beginning. The pattern is built around a single repeating block design known as the Calliope Block, which finishes at 8" x 8" and is constructed in two distinct color versions, with 20 Calliope Blocks total — 10 of each version — forming the quilt center.
About the Whispering Meadow Design
The Whispering Meadow quilt has a soft, garden-inspired aesthetic that draws from a carefully coordinated palette of aqua, coral, cream, orange, pink, and yellow tones. The design achieves its visual depth through the use of multiple coordinating prints from the Riley Blake Whispering Meadow fabric collection, including florals, paisleys, dots, and ginghams. The interplay of these prints within the log-cabin-style Calliope Block creates a sense of movement and layered texture across the quilt surface, evoking the gentle, organic feel of a meadow in bloom.
The Calliope Block – Construction and Technique
The heart of this pattern is the Calliope Block, a pieced block constructed by sewing a series of progressively longer fabric rectangles around a central square — a technique closely related to traditional log cabin quilting. Each block is built up through a sequence of units labeled Unit A through Unit K, with each step adding a new strip of fabric to grow the block outward. This methodical, unit-by-unit construction is a hallmark of precision piecing and is what gives the pattern its advanced classification.
The block construction begins with a 2½" x 2½" square cut from coral floral fabric, which serves as the center. Strips are then added in a specific sequence, alternating between different prints and colorways to create the two block versions. The strips increase in length as the block grows, ranging from 1½" x 2½" up to 1½" x 8½" rectangles. Each unit must be sewn accurately to maintain the block's geometry, making consistent ¼" seam allowances essential throughout.
Block Version One and Version Two
The two Calliope Block versions share the same structural sequence but differ in their fabric placement, creating subtle variation across the quilt surface. Both versions incorporate strips from the following fabrics at different stages:
- Coral floral (C3202 Coral) – used for the central 2½" square and select strips
- Yellow gingham (C3205 Yellow) – used for early-stage 1½" x 2½" and 1½" x 3½" strips
- Coral paisley (C3203 Coral) – used in one block version for 1½" x 3½" strips
- Aqua floral (C3202 Aqua) – used in the alternate block version for 1½" x 3½" strips, and also added later as a 1½" x 6½" strip
- Aqua paisley (C3203 Aqua) – added as a 1½" x 6½" rectangle at the Unit G stage
- Cream dot (C3204 Cream) or pink gingham (C3205 Pink) – added as 1½" x 6½" and 1½" x 7½" strips
- Orange dot (C3204 Orange) or coral floral – added as 1½" x 7½" and 1½" x 8½" strips to complete the block
This careful alternation of prints ensures that each block, while structurally identical, reads differently depending on which colorway combination is used, adding visual rhythm to the finished quilt top.
