Riley Blake Vintage Chic Quilt Pattern by Jina Barney – Downloadable PDF Summary
The Riley Blake Vintage Chic pattern, designed by Jina Barney and available as a free downloadable PDF, guides intermediate quilters through the construction of a charming, feminine quilt measuring a generous 62" x 70". Built entirely from Half Square Triangle (HST) blocks finishing at 4" x 4", this design achieves its vintage-inspired aesthetic through a carefully curated palette of coordinating pink and green prints paired with clean solid fabrics. The pattern is an ideal next step for quilters who have mastered basic piecing and are ready to work with multiple fabric combinations and precise block assembly.
About the Finished Quilt
The completed quilt top measures 62 inches wide by 70 inches tall, making it a versatile lap or throw size. All measurements throughout the pattern include a standard ¼" seam allowance, and all seaming is done with right sides together unless otherwise noted. The quilt center is assembled in 14 rows of 12 blocks, resulting in a grid of 168 Half Square Triangle blocks before borders are added. Jina Barney recommends checking the Riley Blake Designs website at rileyblakedesigns.com for any pattern revisions before beginning.
Techniques Used
- Half Square Triangle (HST) construction: The foundational technique of this quilt. Two 5" squares are paired with right sides together, a diagonal line is drawn from corner to corner on the wrong side of one square, and the pair is sewn ¼" on each side of the drawn line. Cutting along the drawn line yields two HST units from a single pair of squares — an efficient and accurate method widely used in quilting.
- Squaring up blocks: After pressing, each HST block is trimmed to a precise 4½" unfinished size (finishing at 4") to ensure consistent, accurate assembly.
- Row assembly: Blocks are laid out and sewn into rows, then rows are joined to complete the quilt center — a classic straight-set construction approach.
- Bordered quilt construction: The quilt center receives at least one border. The pattern instructs quilters to measure through the center of the quilt before cutting border strips, a best practice that compensates for any slight variation in seam allowances and prevents wavy borders. Side borders are applied first, followed by top and bottom borders.
- Pressing: Proper pressing after each HST unit is created is emphasized to maintain block accuracy throughout assembly.
Stitches and Sewing Methods
- Straight stitch: All piecing is done with a standard straight stitch on a sewing machine, sewn at a consistent ¼" seam allowance throughout.
- Diagonal line stitching: Two parallel lines of straight stitching are sewn ¼" on either side of a drawn diagonal line to create the HST units efficiently.
