Riley Blake Sweet Stuff Quilt Pattern by Elea Lutz – Free Downloadable PDF

The Riley Blake Sweet Stuff pattern, designed by Elea Lutz and available as a free downloadable PDF, produces a cheerful, candy-colored quilt measuring a generous 64" x 64". This is a wonderful project for quilters who enjoy working with coordinated fabric collections, as the design is built around the Milk, Sugar & Flower Fat Quarter Stack (FQ-4340-21) from Riley Blake Designs, paired with a clean white solid background. The finished quilt is a balanced square layout, making it equally suited as a throw, a large lap quilt, or a statement bed topper for a child's room.

Design Overview

The Sweet Stuff quilt is a single-block design that combines two classic quilt block units — the Four-Patch Unit and the Half Square Triangle (HST) — to create an 8" x 8" finished block. The interplay of these two units across the quilt surface produces a lively, dynamic pattern that showcases the variety of prints within the fabric collection. The design relies on careful fabric placement, and the pattern instructs quilters to refer to the quilt photo for guidance on arranging the many different prints and colorways across the quilt top.

The palette is rich and playful, drawing on a wide range of coordinating prints from the Milk, Sugar & Flower collection, including pink main, mint friends, pink friends, yellow friends, pink floral, red floral, mint magpie, pink magpie, mint stripe, pink stripe, red stripe, blue drops, pink drops, yellow drops, blue petals, mint petals, and orange petals. A blue main fabric (C4340 Blue) and a clean white solid (C100-01 Clean White) anchor the design and provide contrast throughout.

Techniques Used

  • Four-Patch Units: Strip piecing is used to construct the Four-Patch Units efficiently. Print strips measuring 2½" x 21" are sewn together with clean white solid strips of the same size, pressed, and then crosscut into 2½" segments. These segments are then sewn together in pairs to form the classic four-patch configuration. A total of 72 Four-Patch Units are assembled across the many different prints specified in the pattern.
  • Half Square Triangles (HSTs): The two-at-a-time HST method is used throughout this pattern. A diagonal line is drawn from corner to corner on the wrong side of a clean white solid 5" square, which is then paired right sides together with a print 5" square. The quilter sews a ¼" seam on each side of the drawn line, then cuts along the line to yield two Half Square Triangle units from each pair of squares. A total of 72 Half Square Triangles are made in this way, using a variety of the collection's prints alongside the white solid.
  • Strip Piecing: The efficient use of strip sets speeds up construction of the Four-Patch Units and is a hallmark of well-engineered quilt patterns designed for accuracy and consistency.
  • Pressing and Squaring Up: The pattern emphasizes pressing throughout construction, which is essential for achieving flat, accurate blocks and a smooth quilt top.
  • Border Cutting with Measured Adjustments: The pattern specifically instructs quilters to measure through the center of the quilt before cutting border pieces, a best-practice technique that ensures borders lie flat and the finished quilt remains square.

Stitches and Quilting Construction

As a quilting pattern, Sweet Stuff is constructed using straight-line machine stitching throughout. All seams are sewn with a precise ¼" seam allowance, which is standard in quilting and critical for blocks to fit together accurately at the 8" finished size. All units are sewn with right sides together unless otherwise noted. The pattern notes that it requires a basic knowledge of quilting technique and terminology, making it accessible to confident beginners and intermediate quilters alike.
