Pattern Structure and Borders

Quilt Center

The quilt begins with a large 24½" x 43½" rectangle cut from the C5018 Green panel. This panel serves as the visual focal point of the design, and the surrounding borders are built outward from it in sequence.

Border 1 – Red Damask Strips

The first border is a simple straight-strip border cut from the C5011 Red damask fabric. Three strips are cut at 2" x WOF (width of fabric), and two additional strips are cut at 1½" x 27½". This narrow inner border creates a clean visual separation between the panel and the more complex Flying Geese border that follows.

Border 2 – Flying Geese Border with Corner Posts

This is the most technically involved section of the quilt and the primary design feature. The Flying Geese units are constructed using the classic two-triangle method, where a pencil line is traced diagonally from corner to corner on the wrong side of 96 brown bubble (C5015 Brown) 3½" squares. These squares are then placed at the corners of 3½" x 6½" rectangles, sewn along the pencil line, trimmed with a ¼" seam allowance, and pressed toward the triangle. The process is repeated on both sides of each rectangle to complete each Flying Geese unit.

Assembly of the Flying Geese border involves sewing rows of geese in specific quantities:
