Riley Blake Doggy Treats Quilt Pattern – Downloadable PDF Summary

The Riley Blake Doggy Treats pattern is a free, downloadable PDF quilt pattern designed for beginner quilters who want to create a cheerful, dog-themed quilt. Published under the Riley Blake Designs brand and featuring fabric from the Rover collection, this pattern produces a finished quilt measuring a generous 76" x 88" — a comfortable throw or lap quilt size that works beautifully as a cozy blanket or decorative home accent. The design is built around a repeating Treat Block, each finishing at 12" x 12", giving the overall quilt a structured, grid-based layout with playful, dog-treat-inspired visual energy.

About the Doggy Treats Quilt Design

The Doggy Treats quilt is a patchwork throw quilt in the blankets and throws category, constructed from a series of identical blocks arranged in a repeating layout. The finished dimensions of 76" x 88" make it a versatile project — large enough to drape over a sofa, use as a bed accent, or gift to a dog-loving friend or family member. The block-based construction keeps the design approachable for beginners while still delivering a visually satisfying result.

The pattern is designed around the Rover Fat Quarter Bundle (FQ-5210-18) by Riley Blake Designs, which provides an assortment of coordinating prints. A cloud solid fabric is used as a contrasting background element within each block, giving the design a clean, airy feel that allows the assorted prints to stand out. The combination of playful prints and a neutral solid is a classic quilting approach that keeps the overall look cohesive even when many different fabrics are used.

Block Construction – The Treat Block

The heart of this quilt is the Treat Block, a 12" x 12" finished block constructed using a straightforward unit-based method. The primary unit within each block is called Unit A, and the pattern calls for a total of 60 Unit As to complete the quilt.

How Unit A Is Made

  • Step 1: Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on an assorted print 4½" square.
  • Step 2: Place the marked assorted print square on top of a cloud solid 4½" x 12½" rectangle, right sides together.
  • Step 3: Sew directly on the drawn diagonal line.
  • Step 4: Leave a ¼" seam allowance and trim away the excess fabric beyond the stitching line. Press the resulting triangle open.
  • Step 5: Repeat this process on the opposite end of the cloud solid rectangle with a second assorted print square to create a flying-geese-style unit.
  • Step 6: This completed piece is Unit A. Repeat the entire process to make all 60 Unit As required for the quilt.

This construction method — placing a small square diagonally on a larger rectangle and sewing on the drawn line — is a classic quilting technique often referred to as the stitch-and-flip or snowball corner method. It is widely used in beginner-friendly patterns because it requires no special rulers or templates, just accurate marking, sewing, and trimming. The result is a clean diagonal seam that creates a pointed or angled shape within the block, adding visual interest without complex piecing.

Block Assembly

  • Each Treat Block is assembled by combining 2 Unit As with 1 assorted print element, following the quilt photo for fabric placement guidance.
  • All seams are sewn with right sides together throughout the construction process.
  • All measurements in the pattern include a ¼" seam allowance, which is the standard seam allowance used in quilting.
