Product Description
Ridge (noun): the long and narrow upper edge, angle, or crest of something, as a hill, wave, or vault. Any raised, narrow strip, as on cloth.
The Ridge Socks are worked toe-up, with a little ridge at the outside of the foot as a detail. They are suitable for men as well as women, and are given in a range of sizes.
The pattern gives a table for stitch counts and measurements per size. You then fill in the numbers and measurements that refer to you throughout the pattern.
They be worked 2AAT (two-at-a-time) or one only, using circular needles for magic loop or DPN's - just what you prefer.

Ridge Socks by Dieuwke Schack-Mulligen
What Is Being Made
Ridge is a pair of knitted socks designed by independent designer Dieuwke Schack-Mulligen. These are toe-up socks featuring a distinctive ridge stitch pattern that creates raised, narrow strips of texture reminiscent of the natural ridges found on hills, waves, or architectural vaults. The pattern is beginner-friendly and suitable for knitters new to sock construction.
Knitting Techniques
Ridge socks are worked in the round from the toe upward, a construction method that allows knitters to try on the socks as they progress and customize the leg length to their preference. The toe-up approach also enables the optional use of an afterthought heel technique, providing flexibility in heel construction. Knitters may choose between circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs) based on their preferred working method.
Stitches Used
The pattern features a repeating ridge stitch worked over 7 stitches across 2 rounds. The ridge pattern alternates between knit and purl stitches to create the textured effect:
- Round 1: k1, p2, k1, p2, k1 (knit 1, purl 2, knit 1, purl 2, knit 1)
- Round 2: p2, k3, p2 (purl 2, knit 3, purl 2)
Ridge pattern charts are provided on page 5 of the downloadable PDF for visual reference. The pattern uses alphabetical values (A, B, etc.) for stitch counts throughout, allowing knitters to insert their own measurements and customize the pattern to their specific size requirements.
Materials and Gauge
The recommended yarn is Socktopus Sokkusu Original, a 100% Merino fiber yarn that provides 396 meters (433 yards) per 120-gram skein. One skein is sufficient to complete the project. The pattern calls for 2.25 mm (US 1) circular needles measuring 80 centimeters in length, or DPNs of the same gauge as an alternative. Additional notions include 1 to 3 stitch markers, a darning needle for finishing, and optional waste yarn if working an afterthought heel.
The recommended gauge is 28 stitches and 34 rows over 10 centimeters (4 inches) on the specified needles. This gauge is essential for achieving the correct sock dimensions. The yarn weight classification is 4-ply, a standard weight for sock knitting that creates durable, well-fitting garments. Multiple sizes are available; specific stitch counts and measurements for each size are provided in a table on page 6 of the pattern.
Pattern Format
Ridge is available as a downloadable PDF pattern, making it accessible for immediate use. The pattern includes customizable elements, with space provided throughout to insert personal stitch count values, enabling knitters to create a clear, personalized version of the pattern tailored to their chosen size.
