Product Description
A strand of fingering/sock weight yarn held together with mohair/fuzzy yarn, combine to create a one of a kind effect.
The wardrobe punch we need right now! Totally one piece, top down, no sew. The deep armholes and shortened body length (so many of us are enjoying lately), together with the bonus of a deep V-neck, makes this the perfect layering sweater. Very fast to work up, with a soft, loose and large tension gauge.Mix and match colours to use yarn you probably already have in your stash! If you have a couple skeins of the same fingering yarn, use that as main colour. Then see if you find another fingering that looks like it might belong with those, for contrast colour. Add mohair that picks up some of the colour of each of the fingering yarns – it doesn’t need to match and the border doesn’t require very much!
You can aim to have the amount of ease you prefer: close fitting, classic, or oversized poncho style.
RIC-RAC 424 Top Down V-Neck Raglan Sweater
What Is Being Made
RIC-RAC 424 is a beginner-friendly top-down V-neck raglan sweater designed by Michelle Porter. This knit garment features a classic raglan construction that begins at the neckline and works downward to the hem, offering versatile sizing from X-Small through 5X-Large. The sweater is designed with adjustable length to the shoulder, allowing knitters to customize the fit. Available finished bust measurements range from 81 cm (32 inches) for the smallest size to 162.5 cm (64 inches) for the largest size, accommodating close-fitting, classic, or oversized poncho-style preferences.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This pattern employs a top-down raglan construction method, which is an ideal approach for beginners as it allows for easy fitting adjustments and eliminates the need for seaming. The raglan shaping creates diagonal lines from the neckline down to the underarms, distributing increases evenly across the front, back, and sleeves for balanced garment proportions.
The sweater begins at the V-neckline and progresses downward in a single continuous piece until the body and sleeves reach their desired length. This construction method enables knitters to try on the garment as they work and adjust the shoulder length as needed, providing flexibility for a custom fit.
Stitches and Stitch Techniques
While specific stitch abbreviations are not detailed in the provided pattern excerpt, the top-down raglan construction typically incorporates stockinette stitch as the primary fabric. The V-neckline shaping requires strategic decreases to create the angled neckline, and raglan increases are worked at regular intervals to expand the garment width as you progress downward.
Yarn and Materials
RIC-RAC 424 features a unique yarn combination technique. The pattern calls for a strand of fingering or sock weight yarn held together with mohair or fuzzy yarn. This two-strand approach creates a distinctive textured effect by pairing a smooth, fine yarn with a soft, hairy yarn. The combination of 3-ply and 4-ply weight yarns allows for creative customization while maintaining consistent gauge and fabric structure.
Knitters will need appropriate needles for working with the combined yarn weight. The specific needle size is determined by achieving the correct gauge with the paired yarns, ensuring the fabric has the intended drape and structure for a well-fitting sweater.
Size Range and Customization
The pattern provides nine complete size options organized into three groups:
- Small Sizes: X-Small (32 inches / 81 cm bust), Small (36 inches / 91.5 cm bust), and Medium (40 inches / 101.5 cm bust)
- Medium Sizes: Large (44 inches / 112 cm bust), X-Large (48 inches / 122 cm bust), and 2X-Large (52 inches / 132 cm bust)
- Large Sizes: 3X-Large (56 inches / 142 cm bust), 4X-Large (60 inches / 152.5 cm bust), and 5X-Large (64 inches / 162.5 cm bust)
Length to shoulder measurements range from 48 cm (19 inches) for X-Small to 72.5 cm (28.5 inches) for 5X-Large, with adjustable length options throughout. This extensive sizing range and the ability to customize ease levels make RIC-RAC 424 accessible to knitters of various body types and style preferences.
Difficulty Level
Rated as a beginner pattern, RIC-RAC 424 is designed to be approachable for knitters new to garment construction.
