What is Being Made

The Rian Cowl is a delicate lace cowl designed as a quick-knit project suitable for beginners. This cowl features a soft, elegant lace pattern and is worked seamlessly from the bottom up. Two size options are available: a smaller cowl measuring 22.5 inches by 8 inches (57cm x 20cm unstretched), and a longer cowl measuring 44 inches by 7 inches (114cm x 20cm unstretched). The design is versatile enough to allow for additional yardage to create a longer cowl or coordinate with matching mitts.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Rian Cowl employs several key knitting techniques that make it accessible for beginner-level knitters. The project is worked seamlessly on circular needles, eliminating the need for seaming. The lace pattern appears on every other row, with plain knit rows interspersed between lace rows to provide rest periods and ease the knitting process. All rows are worked on the right side, making the pattern easily memorized and simple to follow. The designer notes that a cable needle is optional for this project, offering flexibility in construction method. Minimal purling is required throughout the cowl, with purling used only in the garter border, keeping the project straightforward and quick to complete.

Materials and Tools

Yarn: The Rian Cowl uses Lanas Stop York Merino, a soft merino yarn. For the smaller size, just over one ball of yarn is required, with approximately 2 x 50g skeins used in the pattern sample. For the longer cowl size, 3 balls of yarn should be sufficient. The yarn weight is DK or sport weight, making it ideal for delicate lace work.

Needles: 4mm (US 6) circular needles are required for this project, allowing for seamless, in-the-round construction.
