Product Description
Originally part of the Patternworks Essential Accessories Club, I’ve reworked this hat in a slightly heavier yarn. Great in solid colors, tweeds (as shown here), or painted color ways, this is a quick knit to keep your ears warm or give as a gift.
Worked back and forth to make sure the pattern lines up at the beginning/end of rows, the Tracery pattern is a 2-color slip stitch pattern so you’re only using 1 color for every 2 rows and slipping the stitches in the unworked color. This pattern is perfect for the knitter who’s skill level might not be quite at the Intermediate level for learning a new skill.
Retrace Hat by Therese Chynoweth
What Is Being Made
The Retrace Hat is an intermediate-level knitted hat designed by Therese Chynoweth. This downloadable knitting pattern produces a brimmed hat available in three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. The finished brim circumference ranges from 17 inches (43 cm) for the smallest size to 20½ inches (52 cm) for the largest, with a hat length varying from 7 inches (18 cm) to 8¼ inches (21 cm) depending on size selection. The hat features a 1¼-inch (3 cm) overlap at the brim.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs two primary stitch techniques to create visual interest and structure. The design incorporates garter stitch, a fundamental knitting stitch created by knitting every row, which produces a textured, reversible fabric with horizontal ridges. The hat also features a tracery pattern, a decorative stitch pattern that adds an elegant, lace-like quality to the finished garment. The combination of these two techniques allows knitters to create depth and visual complexity while maintaining the intermediate skill level of the project.
Yarn and Materials
The Retrace Hat is designed to be worked in worsted weight yarn (also classified as #4 Medium weight). The pattern calls for two colors of yarn:
- Color A: 72 yards (66 m) for size Small, increasing to 86 yards (79 m) for Medium, and 98 yards (90 m) for Large
- Color B: 65 yards (59 m) for size Small, increasing to 77 yards (70 m) for Medium, and 88 yards (80 m) for Large
The sample hat shown in the pattern was created using HiKoo Kenzie yarn, a premium blend consisting of 50% New Zealand merino, 25% nylon, 10% angora, 10% alpaca, and 5% silk noils. This yarn is available at 160 yards (146 m) per 1¾ ounce (50 g) ball. The sample uses one ball each of Color A (#1007 Kiwi Fruit) and Color B (#1009 Oceania).
Needles and Notions
Knitters will need US 7 (4.5 mm) needles, available as either straight needles or circular needles measuring 16 inches (40 cm) in length, or whichever size is needed to achieve the correct gauge. Additional notions required include a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and finishing, and two ¾-inch (19 mm) buttons for closure or embellishment.
Gauge
Achieving proper gauge is essential for the correct fit of this hat. The pattern specifies two gauge measurements: 19 stitches and 40 rows equal 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch, and 20 stitches and 39 rows equal 4 inches (10 cm) in tracery pattern. Knitters should swatch and measure carefully before beginning the project to ensure their finished hat will fit as intended.
