Product Description

Relevé is a step in ballet in which the heels are lifted off the floor and the dancer balances on the balls of her feet. Not only is that a lovely visual for a sock, but it relates to the inspiration stitch for these cable and lace socks. The “Germaine” stitch is a pairing of a basic cable with an arrowhead lace. Germaine has a similar spelling to the word “germane”, which means “relevant” – and so, in the same way that changing a few letters leads to a completely new meaning, changing a few aspects of the original stitch leads to a charming sock! Note that the circumference of this sock is adjusted by changing needle size and gauge.

Relevé Socks by Katherine Vaughan

What Is Being Made

Relevé socks are a women's fingering weight sock design inspired by ballet technique. The socks are available in three sizes—Small, Medium, and Large—with foot circumferences ranging from 7 inches to 9 inches (17.5 to 23 centimeters) and total foot lengths from 8 inches to 10 inches (21.5 to 25.5 centimeters). The name references the ballet movement in which dancers lift their heels and balance on the balls of their feet, creating both visual inspiration and a conceptual connection to the sock's stitch pattern.

Techniques and Stitches Used

These intermediate-level socks feature the Germaine stitch, which combines a basic cable with an arrowhead lace pattern. This pairing of techniques creates visual interest while maintaining the structural integrity required for sock construction. The interplay between the cable and lace elements reflects the design philosophy that small changes in stitch composition—similar to changing letters in a word—can create entirely new meanings and appearances.

The socks are worked using circular knitting on double-pointed needles or circular needles, which is the standard method for seamless sock construction. This technique allows for continuous rounds and even stitch distribution throughout the leg and foot.

Materials Required

  • Yarn: 400 yards (366 meters) of fingering weight sock yarn in either 3-ply or 4-ply weight
  • Needles: US 1, 2, or 3 (2.25, 2.75, or 3.25 millimeters) double-pointed or circular needles, sized to achieve proper gauge
  • Notions: 3 stitch markers, 1 cable needle (optional), and 1 yarn needle for finishing

Gauge and Sizing

Sizes are accomplished through slight gauge adjustments, allowing knitters to customize the fit by working at different tensions with their chosen needle size. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper sock fit and is directly tied to needle selection.
