Regina Pullover Sweater Knitting Pattern by Berroco – Chunky Weight, Intermediate Level
The Regina pullover is a stylish, relaxed-fit sweater pattern from Berroco Book #417, designed by the Berroco Design Team. This intermediate-level knitting pattern is available as a downloadable PDF and is worked in chunky-weight yarn for a cozy, substantial fabric with satisfying speed on the needles. With eight sizes ranging from a 36½" to 66" finished bust and a recommended 2–4" of positive ease, Regina is designed to fit a wide range of bodies comfortably and flatteringly.
What Is Being Made
Regina is a pullover sweater with a fitted-to-relaxed silhouette. The lower body features a slightly tapered shape, as the lower edge circumference (ranging from 30" to 59¼") is notably narrower than the bust, giving the garment a gentle A-line or shaped quality rather than a boxy tube. Finished lengths range from 18" to 22½" depending on size, making this a classic, hip-grazing pullover length. The sample shown in the pattern is knitted in size 36½" using the colorway #3150 Harissa.
Construction Techniques
Regina uses a smart combination of construction methods that intermediate knitters will find both instructive and enjoyable:
- Bottom-up construction: The sweater begins at the lower edge and is built upward, which allows knitters to easily adjust length before the underarm division.
- Worked in the round: The body is cast on and worked as a single seamless piece in the round up to the underarms, minimizing side seaming and creating smooth, uninterrupted stockinette fabric.
- Divided and worked flat: At the underarms, the body is divided for the back and fronts, which are then worked back and forth in rows — a classic technique that allows for armhole and neckline shaping.
- Seamed finishing: The pattern is categorized as a seamed construction, meaning some assembly is required to join the finished pieces, giving the garment structure and a polished, tailored finish.
- Shaping with increases: The body incorporates a series of M1R and M1L increases (Make 1 Right and Make 1 Left) worked at regular intervals to create the gradual flare from the lower edge up to the full bust circumference. These paired increases are placed symmetrically at each side seam marker for a clean, mirrored shaping effect.
Stitches Used
Regina is primarily a straightforward stockinette project, making it approachable for intermediate knitters who are comfortable working in the round and managing simple shaping. The stitches and techniques include:
- Stockinette stitch (St st): The main fabric of the sweater body, worked as knit rounds in the round and knit/purl rows when working flat.
- Purl rounds: Used at the very beginning of the body to create a subtle textural detail or turning ridge at the lower edge, adding a refined finishing touch.
- M1R and M1L increases: Directional make-one increases used throughout the body shaping to expand the stitch count evenly and invisibly.
- Stitch markers: Two markers of different colors are used to distinguish the beginning-of-round marker from the side seam marker — a helpful organizational detail called out explicitly in the pattern.
- Holding stitches on waste yarn: Underarm stitches are placed on waste yarn rather than bound off, which is a technique commonly used to facilitate a three-needle bind-off or seamless underarm grafting later in finishing.
Materials: Yarn, Needles, and Notions
The pattern calls for Berroco Gingham, a chunky-weight yarn sold in 100-gram balls. Depending on size, knitters will need between 3 and 5 balls. The sample is shown in #3150 Harissa, a rich, warm colorway. Berroco Gingham is a proprietary yarn from Berroco,
