Product Description
Refraction Shawl is made from the top down using two colours. Colour 1 is the neutral ray of light that connects supportively with Colour 2, its flamboyant partner. An ideal project for showcasing yarns that offer that 'Wow!' factor, such as: bright yarns, gradient (graduated tint) yarns, or variegated yarns. Together they mimic the refracted light through a prism that results in a beautiful burst of colour and texture.
Sizing One size: 67” (170cm) wide by 23.5” (60cm) deep at the centre of shawl. Note: The overall size of the shawl will depend on the yarn amount. If using yarn not specified here, please be aware that your shawl may appear slightly smaller.
Tools 4mm (US 6) (or size required to get gauge) circular needles of 100cm (36”) or longer, 6 stitch markers and yarn needle for weaving in ends.
Refraction Shawl by JimiKnits
What is Being Made
The Refraction Shawl is a two-colour knit shawl designed by JimiKnits as a study of colour through light. Inspired by Isaac Newton's famous prism experiment, this shawl uses a neutral base colour paired with a vibrant or gradient companion yarn to create the visual effect of refracted light spreading into a spectrum. The design is particularly well-suited for showcasing bright yarns, gradient yarns, or variegated yarns that benefit from a neutral supporting colour.
Construction Method
The Refraction Shawl is constructed top down, a technique that allows knitters to begin at the apex of the shawl and gradually increase stitches to create the triangular or crescent shape. This method provides flexibility in shawl dimensions and makes it easy to adjust the final size by simply continuing to knit until the desired width is achieved. Top-down construction is particularly advantageous for two-colour designs as it allows for seamless colour transitions throughout the piece.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is designed for 4-ply and sport weight yarns, both lightweight options that create delicate, drapey fabric ideal for shawls. The sample shown features two distinct colourways: Colour 1 in "Smoke and Mirrors" (a neutral grey) and Colour 2 in "LupinMania" (a gradient yarn). The neutral base colour serves as a supportive "ray of light," while the gradient yarn acts as the flamboyant partner, together creating the optical effect of light refracted through a prism. Knitters are encouraged to experiment with their own colour combinations, whether using solid bright yarns, gradient skeins, or variegated options paired with a neutral anchor colour.
Difficulty Level
Rated as an advanced project, the Refraction Shawl is designed for experienced knitters. The advanced difficulty likely reflects the complexity of managing two yarns simultaneously, understanding the shaping increases required for top-down construction, and the colour work coordination needed to achieve the intended visual effect of refracted light.
Design Inspiration
The Refraction Shawl draws its conceptual foundation from physics and light theory. The pattern documentation references Isaac Newton's prism experiment, in which sunlight passing through a triangular glass prism creates a visible spectrum of colour on the opposite side of a room. This shawl translates that scientific principle into textile form, using the interplay of two contrasting yarns to mimic the way light refracts and disperses into multiple colours. The result is a wearable art piece that celebrates colour, texture, and the relationship between a neutral base and vibrant accent.
