Product Description

My 3 year old LOVES frogs, but especially tree frogs. So, I decided to make her a tree frog hat. I did some research and found out a red eyed tree frog has bright red eyes, orange feet, and bright blue and yellow sides...which is where my color scheme came from. You could easily make it a regular tree frog with just green and black and white eyes.

NOTE - I'm rating the feet advanced beginner, but the rest of the pattern is suitable for the beginner but great for anyone.

Red-Eyed Tree Frog Earflap Hat by Kristine Mullen

What Is Being Made

This is a whimsical crochet hat designed to resemble a red-eyed tree frog, complete with characteristic features like the frog's distinctive eye coloring and body proportions. The pattern includes multiple size options ranging from newborn (0–3 months) through adult, making it suitable for the entire family. The hat features earflaps that add both warmth and visual appeal, enhancing the frog character design.

Design Inspiration and Construction

The designer, Kristine Mullen, incorporated educational elements into this pattern by including facts about red-eyed tree frogs before each body part section. These facts explain the color choices used throughout the design, helping crafters understand the biological inspiration behind the pattern. The color scheme directly reflects the frog's natural appearance, with lime green for the body, red for the distinctive eyes, blue accents, and yellow and orange details. The designer refined the pattern after initial creation, adjusting nostril placement and darkness for improved visual accuracy.

Crochet Techniques and Stitches

This intermediate-level crochet project uses fundamental stitches to build the hat structure and frog features. The primary stitches employed include:

  • Chain stitch (ch) – used for foundation and shaping
  • Single crochet (sc) – provides tight, dense fabric
  • Half double crochet (hdc) – creates the main body of the hat with a balanced drape
  • Slip stitch (sl st) – joins rounds and secures stitches

The pattern notes indicate that constructing the feet and eyes requires advanced beginner skills, as these elements demand careful shaping and color changes to achieve the frog's distinctive appearance. The gauge is set at 3 half double crochet stitches equaling 1 inch, which ensures proper sizing across all finished dimensions.

Materials and Tools

This project uses worsted weight yarn from Hobby Lobby's "I Love This Yarn!" line. The color palette includes one full skein of Limelight for the primary hat body, with smaller quantities of specialty colors: black scraps for details, ½ ounce each of Fire Red, royal blue, yellow, and orange for the frog's facial features and accents. Three crochet hooks are required: sizes G, H, and I, allowing the crafter to adjust tension and create varied fabric densities for different hat components. A yarn needle is essential for weaving in ends and adding finishing details.
