Product Description
This is a crochet pattern for a pretty yet simple hat and scarf. It features a close shell pattern with ribbed stitching around the band of the hat and at the ends of the scarf. The scarf features buttons that allow you to wear it either as a regular scarf or as a cowl.
Sized to fit the average adult (head 21-22 inches). The scarf is about 65 inches long. You could easily make this a little bigger or smaller by using a larger or smaller crochet hook.
Requires Worsted weight yarn and size I (5.5mm) crochet hook or hook required to obtain correct guage. Also three buttons about 1 1/8 inches.
Receding Shells Beanie and Cowl Scarf by Early Dawn Crafts
Project Overview
This downloadable crochet pattern from Early Dawn Crafts provides instructions for creating a coordinated set consisting of a fitted beanie hat and a matching cowl scarf. The design features a distinctive receding shells motif that creates visual texture and dimension throughout both pieces. This intermediate-level crochet project is ideal for crafters with foundational crochet skills who are ready to work with post stitches and shell stitch patterns.
What Is Being Made
- Beanie Hat: Sized to fit an average adult woman's head measuring 21 to 22 inches in circumference. The pattern includes instructions for customizing the hat size by adjusting the crochet hook size—using a larger hook (such as size J) creates a hat for a 23-inch head, while a smaller hook (such as size H) produces a hat for a 19 to 20-inch head.
- Cowl Scarf: A circular scarf measuring approximately 65 inches in length, designed to pair with the beanie and feature the same receding shells stitch pattern for visual cohesion.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs several fundamental and intermediate crochet techniques to achieve its textured appearance:
- Chain Stitch (CH): The foundation stitch used to begin the project, with the beanie starting from a chain of 66 stitches joined in the round.
- Single Crochet (SC): Used in the first row to create a dense, stable base for the hat structure.
- Double Crochet (DC): A fundamental stitch that forms the body of the shells pattern.
- Front-Post Double Crochet (FPDC): An advanced technique where the hook works around the post of the stitch from the front, creating raised texture and dimension.
- Back-Post Double Crochet (BPDC): Complementing the front-post variation, this stitch works around the post from the back, contributing to the three-dimensional receding shells effect.
- Slip Stitch (SLST): Used to join rounds and secure stitches without adding height.
- Shell Stitch Pattern: The defining feature of this design, created through the strategic combination of double crochets and post stitches to form shell-like shapes that appear to recede visually.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The pattern calls for worsted weight yarn or aran weight yarn, with a total yardage of approximately 360 yards (7 ounces). The designer used Red Heart Soft for the sample project, though any yarn of comparable weight and yardage will work. Additional materials include a size I (5.5mm) crochet hook, a yarn needle for weaving in ends, and three wood buttons measuring 1 1/8 inch across for embellishment and closure details.
Gauge and Sizing Information
The pattern specifies a gauge of 13 stitches plus 7 rows equaling approximately 4 inches (10 centimeters) when worked in the shell stitch pattern, as shown in rows 5 and 6 of the scarf instructions. This gauge measurement applies specifically to the 21 to 22-inch hat size. Adjusting hook size up or down allows crafters to modify the finished dimensions to fit different head sizes, making this pattern adaptable for various wearers.
Difficulty Level
Classified as an intermediate crochet project, this pattern assumes familiarity with basic crochet stitches and techniques. The inclusion of front-post and back-post double crochets elevates the difficulty beyond beginner level, requiring crafters to understand how to work stitches around post structures rather than into stitch tops. Crafters comfortable with standard crochet abbreviations and able to follow written pattern instructions will find this project manageable and rewarding.
