Realistic Hedgehog Amigurumi Crochet Pattern

What Is Being Made

This is a realistic hedgehog amigurumi toy pattern designed by Sonja van der Wijk. The finished hedgehog measures approximately 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) in length and 3 inches (8 cm) in height, making it a small decorative or play-sized stuffed animal. The pattern creates a three-dimensional crocheted figure with distinctive hedgehog characteristics, including textured spines and a defined body shape.

Crochet Techniques Used

This intermediate-level pattern employs several specialized crochet techniques to achieve its realistic appearance:

  • Working in the round and spirals: The hedgehog body is constructed using circular crochet methods, with rounds worked continuously in spiral fashion rather than joining at the end of each round. Stitch markers are recommended to track the beginning of each new round.
  • Loop stitches: The most distinctive technique used in this pattern is loop stitches, which form on the inside of the crocheted piece during construction. Once the body is complete, the entire piece is turned inside-out to reveal the loops on the exterior, creating the characteristic textured appearance of hedgehog spines.
  • Multi-yarn construction: The pattern combines different yarn types strategically—using one yarn for the head and belly sections and a different yarn for the spine sections—to create visual and textural contrast.
  • Color blocking: Two colors of yarn are held together simultaneously when working the spine sections, creating a blended, natural-looking hedgehog spine effect.

Stitches Used

While the PDF excerpt does not provide a complete stitch list, the pattern clearly features loop stitches as the primary stitch type for creating the hedgehog's distinctive spined texture. The pattern is written in standard American crochet terminology, so all stitch abbreviations and instructions follow American conventions.

Materials: Yarn and Tools

This pattern uses Icelandic wool yarns for authentic construction:

  • Yarn weight: Aran weight yarn is the primary yarn weight used throughout the pattern.
  • Head and belly: Istex Lètt lopi yarn (specific color numbers referenced in the pattern's materials section).
  • Spines: Two colors of Istex Einband Lopi yarn held together as one strand to create the blended spine appearance. Specific color numbers are provided in the pattern.
  • Tools: A crochet hook appropriate for aran weight yarn (size determined by the specific yarn chosen), stitch markers to track rounds, and fiberfill or polyester stuffing for filling the completed amigurumi.

Pattern Notes for Crafters

The finished size of the hedgehog is dependent on both the yarn weight used and the crafter's tension. While the recommended yarn produces a 6.5 by 3-inch hedgehog, using different yarn weights or varying crochet tension will result in larger or smaller finished pieces. The pattern recommends experimenting with eye size and placement despite provided recommendations, as this allows customization based on the actual finished dimensions of your specific hedgehog.
