Rayfishcloth by Louisa Noble

Project Overview

The Rayfishcloth is a versatile knitted dishcloth, washcloth, or facecloth designed by independent designer Louisa Noble. This creative project is equally suited for kitchen or bathroom use, combining practical functionality with whimsical design. The cloth features a fish-shaped silhouette and is knitted seamlessly from tail to nose, eliminating the need for finishing seams.

What Is Being Made

The Rayfishcloth is a small, decorative cloth measuring approximately 18cm (7 inches) long from nose to tail and 18cm (7 inches) across the wings. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a functional yet playful textile that doubles as both a practical kitchen or bathroom cloth and a charming decorative piece. The fish-shaped design makes it an engaging project for knitters seeking something beyond traditional rectangular cloths.

Knitting Techniques

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to achieve its distinctive shape:

  • Seamless construction: The cloth is knitted as one continuous piece from tail to nose, with no sewing required for assembly
  • Strategic increases: Increases are worked at either end of the needle on even rows to create the expanding body shape
  • Pickup and knit method: After completing the main body, 3 stitches are picked up and knitted to form the tail, demonstrating efficient garment construction
  • Double-strand knitting: The pattern uses a double strand of two contrasting yarn colors (white and purple) held together throughout, creating visual interest and dimensional color work

Stitches Used

The Rayfishcloth relies on fundamental knitting stitches suitable for intermediate crafters:

  • Knit stitch (K): The primary stitch used for every odd row, creating a smooth stockinette texture on the cloth
  • Increases (inc 1): Worked strategically on even rows at either end of the needle to shape the fish body and create the widest point at the wings
  • Cast-on: The pattern begins with a 5-stitch cast-on, which serves as the nose of the fish

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Rayfishcloth pattern calls for 100% cotton DK weight yarn for optimal results. Cotton is recommended because it produces a cloth that is soft, absorbent, luxurious, and long-lasting—essential qualities for a dishcloth or washcloth that will be frequently laundered and used in wet environments.

  • Yarn A (white): 20g of cotton DK yarn
  • Yarn B (purple): 20g of cotton DK yarn
  • Total yarn weight: 40g of DK weight yarn
  • Needle size: UK size 6 / US size 8 / 5mm needles
  • Additional tools: A pair of doublepins (double-pointed needles) of the same size for working the tail section

Difficulty Level and Suitability

Rated as an intermediate knitting project, the Rayfishcloth is appropriate for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle simple shaping techniques. The pattern introduces pickup and knit methods and strategic increase placement without overwhelming complexity, making it an excellent stepping stone for advancing knitters seeking to expand their technical repertoire.
