Product Description
I struggle with naming my patterns. When I had fnished knitting this I thought to myself ‘That’s rather nice!’, which for me is actually high praise, and so the name has stuck.
This sweater features deep columns of small cables and Japanese stitch patterns rather than traditional ribbing to make it stand out from the crowd.
Front, back, and sleeves are worked flat from the bottom up. The shoulders are joined with a 3-needle bind off. The body and sleeves are seamed. Stitches are picked up around the neck for the neckband, which is completed in the round.
Sample was made using Sugar Bush Yarns Bliss (70% extra fne superwash merino, 20% mulberry silk, 10% cashmere; 105 yards/96 m per 50 g) in colourway Autumn Leaves.
Rather Nice Jumper by Helen Gipson
What is Being Made
The Rather Nice Jumper is an advanced-level knitted sweater designed by Helen Gipson. This garment features a distinctive construction with deep columns of small cables and Japanese stitch patterns integrated throughout the design, replacing traditional ribbing elements to create a visually striking finished piece.
Construction Techniques
The Rather Nice Jumper employs a flat-working methodology for the majority of the garment. The front, back, and sleeves are all worked flat from the bottom up, allowing for precise stitch pattern placement and control. The shoulders are joined using a 3-needle bind off technique, which creates a strong, secure seam at the shoulder line. The body and sleeves are then seamed together. The neckband is completed using a different approach: stitches are picked up around the neck opening and worked in the round to create a finished edge.
Stitches Used
This pattern incorporates cable stitches arranged in deep columns throughout the sweater body and sleeves. In addition to cables, the design features Japanese stitch patterns, which add textural interest and visual complexity to the garment. These stitch techniques work together to eliminate the need for traditional ribbing, making the Rather Nice Jumper stand out from conventional sweater designs.
Materials and Yarn
The sample garment was created using Sugar Bush Yarns Bliss, a luxury blend yarn composed of 70% extra fine superwash merino, 20% mulberry silk, and 10% cashmere. This yarn is classified as sport weight, with a yardage of 105 yards per 50 grams (96 meters per 50 grams). The sample was worked in the Autumn Leaves colourway. Knitters will need appropriate needles for sport weight yarn to achieve the correct gauge and stitch definition required for the cable and Japanese stitch patterns featured in this design.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced difficulty, reflecting the complexity of working multiple stitch patterns, managing cable columns, and executing the various construction techniques including flat working, 3-needle bind off, and picking up stitches for the neckband.
