Rainforest Socks by Laura Whittington

What is Being Made

Rainforest Socks are a pair of knitted socks designed by Laura Whittington featuring an Estonian lace stitch pattern throughout the leg and top of the foot. The socks are named for their visual resemblance to looking up through a rainforest canopy, inspired by the intricate lacework of the traditional stitch pattern. These are beginner-friendly socks suitable for knitters new to sock construction.

Knitting Techniques Used

The socks are knitted top down in the round, a popular method for sock construction that allows for easy customization of fit and length. The pattern begins with a 1x1 ribbed cuff for a secure, elastic edge. A lace rib section follows the cuff, contributing to the exceptional stretch and comfort of the leg. The classic turned heel is employed for durability and traditional sock shaping. The sole is worked in straightforward knit stitches, providing a smooth, comfortable base for wearing.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The primary decorative element is an Estonian lace knitting stitch pattern, a traditional openwork design sourced from a stitch dictionary. This lace pattern is worked all around the leg of the sock and across the top of the foot, creating the characteristic canopy-like appearance. The pattern combines:

  • 1x1 ribbing for the cuff
  • Lace rib for the upper leg section
  • Estonian lace chart pattern for the leg and foot top
  • Knit stitch for the sole

Materials

Rainforest Socks are designed to be knitted with 4ply sock yarn, a lightweight yarn weight ideal for creating fitted, durable socks with excellent stitch definition. The pattern was created using hand-dyed sock wool from an independent dyer, demonstrating the designer's preference for artisanal, locally-sourced materials. The 4ply weight allows the intricate Estonian lace pattern to be clearly visible while maintaining the structural integrity needed for a wearable sock.

Pattern Format

This design is available as a downloadable PDF, making it immediately accessible for knitters ready to begin their project. The beginner difficulty level makes this pattern suitable for knitters who have basic knitting skills and are looking to expand into sock knitting with a visually interesting stitch pattern.
