Product Description

This dino is a part of Rainbow dinos e-book.

Thanks to his unique construction, the only sewing you’ll need to do is closing the openings!

His name means “deceptive lizard" and it’s the first name given to this dinosaur by Othniel C. Marsha in 1877. Two years later, the same paleontologist found another dinosaur and called him a Brontosaur. In the early 20th century it was discovered that both Apatosaur and Brontosaur were the same dinosaur! The official name is now the first one – Apatosaur. It seems that he is deceptive after all… Apatosaur ajax was about 16m measured from head to tail, this one is 4"/ 10cm.

Rainbow Dinosaur - Apatosaurus/Brontosaurus Amigurumi Toy

What Is Being Made

This is a crocheted amigurumi toy dinosaur designed by Justyna Kacprzak, featuring a rainbow-colored Apatosaurus (also known as Brontosaurus). The finished toy measures approximately 4 inches or 10 centimeters from head to tail, making it a small, collectible stuffed creature perfect for display or play. The pattern draws inspiration from the real Apatosaurus ajax, a sauropod dinosaur that measured about 16 meters in length, translating that impressive prehistoric creature into an adorable miniature handmade version.

Crochet Techniques Used

This intermediate-level crochet project employs several key techniques to construct the three-dimensional dinosaur form. The pattern utilizes continuous rounds throughout, meaning you work in spiraling rounds without joining each round with a slip stitch—this creates seamless, smooth transitions between rows and is a hallmark of amigurumi construction. The designer specifically recommends using invisible decreases, particularly for the thinner parts of the dinosaur such as the legs and tail, to maintain a neat and professional appearance on the finished toy.

A specialized technique mentioned in the pattern involves crocheting front loops only when working sections with 4 or fewer stitches in the round. This approach simplifies construction of these delicate, narrow sections and makes the crocheting process more manageable when working with such tight stitch counts.

Stitches and Construction Methods

While the complete stitch list is not fully detailed in the provided content, the pattern clearly incorporates standard amigurumi stitches used to build dimensional forms. The project is structured with multiple separate parts that are crocheted individually and then assembled together to form the complete dinosaur. This modular approach allows crafters to work on distinct components—such as the body, head, four legs, tail, and possibly spikes or other details—before joining them into the final toy.

Materials Required

This crochet project requires yarn in multiple colors to achieve the rainbow effect characteristic of the design. You will need an appropriate crochet hook sized to match your yarn weight, though the specific hook size is not detailed in the excerpt provided. Additionally, standard amigurumi construction requires fiberfill stuffing to fill the completed pieces and create the three-dimensional form of the toy.

Difficulty Level and Suitability

Classified as an intermediate difficulty project, this pattern is suitable for crocheters with some experience beyond basic skills. The continuous round technique, invisible decreases, and multi-part assembly require familiarity with fundamental crochet stitches and the ability to follow more complex pattern instructions. The pattern is presented as a downloadable PDF from designer Justyna Kacprzak of cuteandkaboodle.com, allowing crafters to work at their own pace with the full instructions available digitally.
