RAGGED FALLS SCARF
This pattern is available for free on my blog.
A couple weeks back I released the Ragged Falls Poncho crochet pattern, so I immediately began picturing all the different ways I could use that particular stitch pattern. This super long, ultra squishy scarf pattern is a great way to use up any super bulky yarn in your stash. Or, have fun mixing and matching yarns and make it a stash buster!
All of my patterns are written in standard American terms.
Ragged Falls Scarf by Sincerely Pam
What Is Being Made
The Ragged Falls Scarf is a rectangular crocheted accessory designed by Sincerely Pam. This scarf measures approximately 10 inches wide and 88 inches long, making it a generous, versatile wrap suitable for various styling options. The pattern is worked in rows from the bottom up, allowing crafters to customize the final length by adjusting the number of pattern repeats.
Craft and Technique
This project uses the crochet technique, a fiber arts method that creates fabric using a single hook and a series of interlocking loops. The Ragged Falls Scarf employs fundamental crochet stitches to build its structure, making it accessible for those new to the craft. The pattern is worked in horizontal rows, with the flexibility to extend or shorten the scarf based on personal preference and available yardage.
Stitches Used
The Ragged Falls Scarf incorporates several essential crochet stitches:
- Chain (ch): The foundation stitch used to create the base of the pattern
- Single Crochet (sc): A fundamental short stitch that creates a tight, dense fabric
- Half Double Crochet (hdc): A medium-height stitch offering balanced drape and structure
- Double Crochet (dc): A taller stitch that creates an airier, more flowing fabric
- Slip Stitch (slst): Used to join rounds or transition between sections without adding height
The pattern key notes that beginning chains do not count as stitches throughout the project, a common convention in crochet patterns.
Materials and Tools
Yarn: The Ragged Falls Scarf requires 400 yards of Super Bulky weight yarn (category #6). The sample shown in the pattern was created using Lion Brand Thick and Quick yarn. The designer notes that yarns similar in fiber content and weight can be substituted, and the pattern is compatible with gradient or cake yarn varieties, offering creative color options beyond solid colors.
Hook: A size Q (16mm) crochet hook is required to work with the super bulky yarn weight, creating appropriately sized stitches and fabric drape.
Additional Tools: A tapestry needle is needed for weaving in yarn ends, and a measuring tape helps track the scarf's length during construction.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 6 double crochet stitches equaling 4 inches. This measurement ensures proper fabric density and drape. The scarf comes in one size with a finished width of 10 inches and a standard length of 88 inches using the full 400 yards of yarn.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it an excellent introduction to crochet for new crafters. The use of basic stitches and straightforward row-by-row construction means that those just learning to crochet can successfully complete this project.
