Quentin the Octopus Knitting Pattern

What is Being Made

Quentin the Octopus is a colorful knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a playful octopus character using multiple yarn colors to bring the design to life. The toy is an excellent project for knitters looking to practice color work and toy construction techniques.

Craft and Techniques

This pattern is designed specifically for knitting, making it ideal for those working with needles rather than hooks. The project teaches several important knitting techniques:

  • Flat knitting – All pieces are worked flat (back and forth) on straight single-pointed knitting needles, not in the round. This approach makes the pattern more accessible for intermediate knitters.
  • Stripe practice – The octopus features colorful stripes, providing an excellent opportunity to practice working with multiple yarn colors and managing color changes throughout the project.
  • Seaming – Pieces are joined together using mattress stitch, a technique that creates nearly invisible seams ideal for toy construction.
  • Casting on and off – The pattern uses a regular knitted cast on. For finishing, the "pull through" cast-off method is employed: the yarn is cut with a 30cm tail, threaded onto a darning needle, sewn through the stitches, and pulled tight to secure.

Stitches Used

Stockinette stitch (also called stocking stitch) forms the foundation of this pattern. This classic stitch is created by knitting right-side rows and purling wrong-side rows, producing a smooth, flat fabric with a distinctive V-pattern texture on the finished side.

Materials

Quentin the Octopus is knitted using acrylic DK yarn (double knitting, light worsted weight, 8 ply). The pattern requires up to 25 grams in each of six different color shades: white, pink, purple, dark blue, pale blue, and green. Knitters will need a pair of straight single-pointed knitting needles appropriate for DK weight yarn, along with a darning needle for seaming and finishing.
