Product Description

Quathiaski Mitts

These cozy and warm fingerless Mitts are the perfect antidote to chilly hands when riding the ferry to QCove (Quathiaski Cove) Quadra Island from Vancouver Island in any season.

These one size Mitts are worked in the round from the wrist to the fingers. The Mitts utilize y/o's for increases for the thumb shaping and knit stitch and purl stitch for the body of the wrister and the trim respectively. The 6 row MC and 2 row CC repeating stripe pattern is worked throughout including the thumb. The Mitts are started and finished as well as the finished thumb edge with a 2 row purled edge. No sewing is required - weave in the ends when completed!

When using the yarn recommended ( 2 skeins in total) you will have enough for two sets of Mitts, with opposite MC and CC. Knit a pair for yourself and a friend! Check out the included instructions for Jogless Stripes!

Enjoy!

Quathiaski Mitts by Dockside Knits

What is Being Made

The Quathiaski Mitts are a pair of warm, comfortable wristers designed to keep hands cozy during chilly weather. These mittens are sized as one size fits most and are inspired by the scenic ferry rides across Discovery Pass to Quathiaski Cove on Quadra Island, British Columbia. With a finished circumference of 7¾ inches (19.5 cm) and length of 9½ inches (23.5 cm), these mittens are practical for fall and winter wear when spending time outdoors or on open-air transportation.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Quathiaski Mitts are constructed using fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level knitters. The primary stitch used throughout the pattern is stockinette stitch, which creates a smooth, classic fabric with a flat appearance and subtle texture. A key construction technique featured in this pattern is the thumb gusset, which allows for a properly fitted thumb opening and ensures comfortable wear. The pattern provides detailed tutorials on how to knit a thumb gusset, making this technique accessible to knitters developing their skills.

These mittens are worked in the round using either double-pointed needles (dpn's) or a circular needle with the magic loop method, both of which eliminate the need for seaming and create seamless, professional-looking results. The pattern includes guidance on color selection, allowing knitters to customize their mittens with different yarn colors for a personalized finish.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Quathiaski Mitts pattern calls for Berroco Ultra Alpaca yarn in a worsted weight. The fiber content is 50% wool and 50% camelid-alpaca, providing warmth, softness, and durability. Two skeins are required to complete the project: one skein in Stone Washed Mix (Blue) and one skein in Winter White. Each skein contains 215 yards (197 meters) and weighs 3.53 ounces (100 grams).

Needles required are US #5 (3.75 mm) double-pointed needles or circular needles, sized to achieve the correct gauge. The pattern specifies a gauge of 21 stitches in stockinette stitch, which knitters should measure carefully to ensure proper fit. Additional notions needed include three stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats and shaping, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
